More than 36,000 Cubans have come to the United States through the border with Mexico and the port and airport of Miami during the fiscal year ending on Wednesday, representing an increase of over 60% over the previous year.
As reported Tuesday Efe US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of October 1, 2014 to August 31 last they reached 36,497 Cubans, while for all of last fiscal year (October 2013 to September 2014 ) they were 22,162.

Según informó hoy martes a Efe la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección de Fronteras (CBP), del 1 de octubre de 2014 al 31 de agosto pasado llegaron 36.497 cubanos, mientras que durante todo el pasado año fiscal (de octubre de 2013 a septiembre de 2014) fueron 22.162.
Según grupos expertos en inmigración como el Migration Policy Institute (MPI), este incremento obedece al temor de los cubanos a perder los beneficios migratorios tras la normalización de las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Cuba.
De acuerdo con las cifras de CBP a las que Efe tuvo acceso, a través de El Paso y Laredo (Texas), Tucson (Arizona) y San Diego (California) han entrado 27.441 inmigrantes cubanos, mientras que por Miami fueron 9.056.
A estos inmigrantes se suman los hallados por la Guardia Costera en aguas del Atlántico o que alcanzaron tierra en botes o precarias balsas, que también tuvieron un incremento, en este caso de más del 85%.
Desde octubre de 2014 hasta la fecha han intentado alcanzar las costas estadounidenses más de 4.300 cubanos, durante todo el año fiscal anterior se reportaron 3.677.
La cifras de la Guardia Costera incluyen “los interceptados en el Estrecho de Florida, el Caribe y el océano Atlántico por la Guardia Costera y los reportes de otras agencias extranjeras, como las de Cuba, sobre intentos que fueron frustrados y los que tocan suelo estadounidense”.
Estos últimos se acogen a la Ley de Ajuste Cubano de 1966 y su política de “pies secos/pies mojados que establece que los cubanos que llegan a suelo estadounidense pueden quedarse, mientras que los interceptados en el mar, aunque sea a pocos metros de la orilla, son devueltos a Cuba.
