FILM “EVERYONE LEAVES” (TODOS SE VAN) COMPETE IN SPAIN HUELVA FESTIVAL.
The Colombian director Sergio Cabrera presented on Sunday in the Andalusian city of Huelva, his film ‘Everyone Leaves”, based on a novel by Cuban writer Wendy Guerra, with which it competes for Columbus Gold at the forty-first edition of the Festival Latin American Film.
Cabrera has already won this award in 1993 with ‘The Snail strategy’ (La Estrategia del Caracol) and the presentation of this new film said “Huelva occupies a very important place in (their) film history”, the Mexican agency Notimex reported.
“Everyone Leaves” (Colombia, 2015) suggests a story about childhood, justice and freedom.
Inspired by the same name and almost autobiographical novel by Cuban writer Wendy Guerra, the film tells the story of Snow, an eight year old living in Cuba in 1979 and the struggle of parents for custody.
Eve, the mother, is an artist who believes in the revolution without censorship or authoritarianism. It has remarried with Dan, a Swede who works in the construction of a nuclear plant. Manuel, the father, is a playwright who sacrifices himself to writing plays in an inhospitable area of the Island, with the dream of building the new Latin American man.
The Battle of parents leads to a trial in which the state intervenes arbitrarily.
Snow, with his father, live extreme situations that lead them to invent a way to return to her mother. Disenchantment radicalized while Eva’s father and Snow try to leave the country after the expulsion of Dan.
Colombian filmmaker explained that the small Cuban Mojena is Rachel who plays Snow and was chosen from more than a hundred girls for the role.
According to statements by the director, one of the most complicated procedures to get permission was out of the country with his mother for shooting, once discarded the idea of filming in Cuba.
He noted that the silence of the Cuban authorities, who never responded to the request for permission to film in the country, he raised another challenge as a filmmaker, having to seek new locations for the film.
The same situation occurred with the Spanish Agusti Villaronga film, ‘The King of Havana’, also based on another novel by Cuban writer Pedro Juan Gutierrez, whose shooting had to be held in Dominican Republic and has not been screened in Island rooms after its release.
Sergio Cabrera, a Colombian filmmaker and television, ‘Everyone Leaves” is his most personal film, after a silence of eleven years.

El cineasta colombiano Sergio Cabrera presentó el domingo en la ciudad andaluza de Huelva, su película ‘Todos se van’, basada en una novela de la escritora cubana Wendy Guerra, con la que compite por el Colón de Oro en la cuadragésima primera edición del Festival de Cine Iberoamericano.
Cabrera ya ganó este galardón en 1993 con ‘La estrategia del caracol’ y en la presentación de este nuevo filme aseguró que “Huelva ocupa un lugar muy importante en (su) historial cinematográfico”, reporta la agencia mexicana Notimex.
Todos se van (Colombia, 2015) plantea una historia sobre la niñez, la justicia y la libertad.
Inspirada en la novela homónima y casi autobiográfica de la escritora cubana Wendy Guerra, el filme narra la historia de Nieve, una niña de ocho años que vive en la Cuba de 1979 y la lucha de sus padres por su custodia.
Eva, la madre, es una artista que cree en la revolución sin censuras ni autoritarismo. Se ha vuelto a casar con Dan, un sueco que trabaja en la construcción de una planta nuclear. Manuel, el padre, es un dramaturgo que se sacrifica para escribir teatro en una zona inhóspita de la Isla, con el sueño de construir el nuevo hombre latinoamericano.
La batalla de los padres desemboca en un juicio en el que el Estado interviene de manera arbitraria.
Nieve, con su padre, vive situaciones extremas que la llevan a inventarse la manera de volver con su madre. El desencanto radicaliza al padre mientras Eva y Nieve tratan de salir del país tras la expulsión de Dan.
El cineasta colombiano explicó que la pequeña cubana Rachel Mojena es quien interpreta a Nieve y fue escogida entre más de cien niñas para el papel.
Según declaraciones del realizador, uno de los trámites más complicados fue conseguir el permiso para sacarla del país junto a su madre para el rodaje, una vez descartada la idea de filmar en Cuba.
Apuntó que el silencio de las autoridades cubanas, que nunca respondieron a la solicitud de permiso para rodar en el país, le planteó otro reto como realizador, al tener que buscar nuevas localizaciones para la película.
La misma situación se produjo con la película del español Agustí Villaronga, ‘El Rey de La Habana’, basada también en la novela homónima de otro escritor cubano, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, cuyo rodaje tuvo que realizarse en República Dominicana y no se ha proyectado en las salas de la Isla después de su estreno.
Para Sergio Cabrera, realizador colombiano de cine y televisión, ‘Todos se van’, es su película más personal, tras un silencio de once años.
