Eustacia María Caridad del Rio Hernandez was born in Santiago de Cuba a March 29, 1892 known as Caridad del Río, Caridad Mercader Mercader or Caritat -for the surname of her husband- or the “Passion Catalana” was a Catalan communist militant and agent of the Soviet NKVD.
It is especially known for being the mother of Ramon Mercader, the murderer of Leon Trotsky, and she had participated in the operation.
Caridad Mercader belonged to a wealthy family of Spaniards who returned to Spain from wealthy America, in Barcelona in the early twentieth century. She married young Pablo Mercader, a member of the Barcelona manufacturing bourgeoisie, from whom he took the surname, and with whom she had five children. After the end of her marriage to Paul Mercader he left his family and turned her back on her class.
She frequented anarchist circles and eventually joined the Communist ideology. She participated in the fighting to quell a military uprising in Barcelona and joined the columns left for Aragon, where she was injured, so had to go back to the rear.
In the ranks of the PSUC, she achieved some notoriety (it was presented as the “Catalan Pasionaria”). In late 1936 she led a propaganda mission in Mexico and later became an agent of the NKVD in Spain.
Her son Ramon, a member of the PSUC and officer in the Republican army, was also captured by the Soviet espionage during the war, probably with the intervention of his mother and trained to kill Leon Trotsky, exiled in Mexico. Charity, who had settled in Paris sometime in 1937, also participated in the operation but when Ramon was arrested after killing Trotsky, she managed to leave Mexico and come to the Soviet Union, where he was received with honors. There was actively involved in the conflict between different factions of communism Spanish exile.
In 1944 she got permission to leave the country in order to secure the release of his son. But contrary to the agreed terms, traveled to Mexico, where they carried out a sting operation to get Ramon Mercader flee from prison. The presence of Caridad Mercader backfired because Mexican authorities tightened Ramon prison conditions and the Soviets abandoned their operation without getting him out of jail. Ramón never forgave her mother’s interference.
After the failure of the operation, Caridad settled in Paris, enjoying a Soviet pension. Occasionally he traveled to the Soviet Union to visit their sons, Luis and Ramon, who had settled there after serving his sentence in Mexico. He died in Paris in 1975.

Es especialmente conocida por ser la madre de Ramón Mercader, el asesino de León Trotski, y por haber participado personalmente en la operación.
Caridad Mercader pertenecía a una familia acomodada, de los españoles que regresaron a España proveniente de América ricos, en la Barcelona de principios del siglo XX. Se casó joven con Pablo Mercader, miembro de la burguesía fabril barcelonesa, de quien tomó el apellido, y con el que tuvo cinco hijos. Tras el fin de su matrimonio con Pablo Mercader se alejó de su familia y dio la espalda a su clase social.
Frecuentó círculos anarquistas y finalmente se adhirió al ideario comunista. Participó en los combates para sofocar la sublevación militar en Barcelona y se unió a las columnas que partieron hacia Aragón, donde resultó herida, por lo que tuvo que volver a la retaguardia.
En las filas del PSUC, alcanzó cierta notoriedad (fue presentada como la «Pasionaria catalana»). A finales de 1936 encabezó una misión propagandística en México y posteriormente se convirtió en agente del NKVD en España.
Su hijo Ramón, también miembro del PSUC y oficial en el ejército republicano, fue igualmente captado por el espionaje soviético durante la guerra —probablemente con la intervención de su madre— y entrenado para eliminar a León Trotski, exiliado en México. Caridad, quien se había instalado en París en algún momento de 1937, también participó en la operación, pero cuando Ramón fue detenido tras asesinar a Trotski, ella logró salir de México y llegar a la Unión Soviética, donde fue recibida con honores. Allí participó activamente en los conflictos entre las distintas facciones del comunismo español exiliado.
En 1944 consiguió un permiso para salir del país con el objetivo de lograr la liberación de su hijo. Pero contraviniendo las condiciones acordadas, viajó a México, donde se llevaba a cabo una operación encubierta para conseguir que Ramón Mercader huyese de la cárcel. La presencia de Caridad Mercader fue contraproducente, pues las autoridades mexicanas endurecieron las condiciones penitenciarias de Ramón y los soviéticos abandonaron su operación, sin conseguir sacarle de la cárcel. Ramón nunca perdonó la interferencia de su madre.
Tras el fracaso de la operación, Caridad se estableció en París, gozando de una pensión soviética. Viajaba ocasionalmente a la Unión Soviética para visitar a sus hijos, Luis y Ramón, quien se había establecido allí tras cumplir su condena en México. Murió en la capital francesa en 1975.
