RECUERDOS DE UNA ÉPOCA: ‘EL PASEO DEL PRADO’ EN LA HABANA.(1)
Cuando Prado todavía era Prado —décadas del 40 y el 50 del siglo pasado— podía en ese Paseo sacarse pasaje para cualquier parte del mundo. Aunque ya las oficinas de algunas compañías de aviación y de reserva y venta de boletos se habían trasladado al Vedado y en particular a la Rampa —incluso a grandes hoteles como el Havana Hilton, inaugurado en 1958— permanecían en el Prado habanero agencias como Canadian Pacific Airline, en el 454 de la calle, que volaba a Hong Kong, Tokio, Honolulu y Australia y también a Canadá, Europa Central y Sudamérica; Sas, aerolíneas escandinavas, a Suecia y Noruega; Tair llevaba pasaje y carga a Centroamérica; Branft lo hacía al medio oeste norteamericano, Aerolíneas Argentinas, a Buenos Aires, y la British European volaba a Londres y a las posesiones británicas en las Antillas. Aeropostal Venezolana (en los bajos del hotel Sevilla) volaba directo a Caracas en lujosos Súper G Constellation y desde esa ciudad conectaba con toda la América del Sur.
No faltaban las oficinas de la KLM, la aerolínea holandesa; y la cubana Aerovías Q, en Prado 12, volaba a Cayo Hueso, Palm Beach e Isla de Pinos y fletaba aviones a todas partes, aquellos míticos Douglas DC-3 de 28 pasajeros, de los que todavía vuelan unos 2 000 en todo el mundo. Cubana Aero Expreso, en Prado esquina a Trocadero, transportaba paquetes y mercancía a Europa (vía Lisboa y Madrid) y también a Nueva York, México, Miami, Haití y Nassau, así como a 20 ciudades cubanas.
Podrían mencionarse otras aerolíneas más, pero el escribidor, también sin ánimo de ser exhaustivo, quiere decir que en la época todavía funcionaba (bajos del Centro Gallego) la oficina de la agencia Dussaq Company Limited, que en 1958 se tenía como la más antigua organización cubana de viajes y transporte; fue fundada en 1876 y se especializaba en viajes internacionales y excursiones a Europa y a cualquier parte del mundo. Asimismo prestaba servicio (en Prado 20) la American Express Co., una organización de viajes conocida mundialmente que aseguraba reservas y compra de pasajes en todas las líneas aéreas y de vapores, ferrocarriles y ómnibus del mundo entero y programaba excursiones e itinerarios tanto de grupos como individuales.

Los automóviles Porsche y Packard mantenían sus agencias de venta en los bajos del desaparecido hotel de ese nombre, y Guerlain abría su perfumería en el número 157. En Prado tenían sus sedes el Partido Ortodoxo (número 109) y el Partido Demócrata (206). En Prado 111 estaba el Club de Cantineros y la Asociación de Dependientes del Comercio de La Habana, en el número 207. La Asociación de Transportistas Aéreos de Cuba, en el 252. Los centros Andaluz y Montañez, así como la Asociación Canaria, tenían su sede en los números 104, 362 y 201, respectivamente, de esa vía. El Casino Español, en Prado y Ánimas, se creó en 1869 y contaba con 2 304 socios a fines de 1956. Era la decana de las sociedades regionales españolas. En Prado 216 radicaba la Asociación Libanesa de La Habana y en el 258 la Asociación Sirio Libio Palestina.
En la esquina de Prado y Virtudes, el American Club evidenciaba, dice el historiador Carlos del Toro, la presencia de una vigorosa e influyente colonia norteamericana en Cuba. Su antecedente hay que buscarlo en el United States Club, inaugurado en 1899 en el mismo edificio, con el fin de ofrecer un local de reunión a los oficiales norteamericanos destacados en Cuba y a los marinos de la misma nacionalidad que arribaran al puerto habanero. Pero el United States Club no pudo resistir la competencia del Club de Oficiales del campamento militar de Columbia, en Marianao, y cerró sus puertas en 1900. Poco después, tras el asesinato del presidente McKinley, el 6 de septiembre de 1901, el gobernador militar Leonardo Wood, en una proclama dirigida a los estadounidenses radicados en la Isla, lamentaba que no existiese en Cuba una organización norteamericana capaz de asumir el homenaje al mandatario difunto. Sus palabras no cayeron en el vacío y luego de varias reuniones, el 21 de octubre de 1901 en el hotel Pasaje, también en Prado, se constituía oficialmente el American Club, que pasaría a sesionar, con sus 59 socios fundadores, en el edificio de Prado y Virtudes.
A partir de ahí en el American Club se juntaron norteamericanos, cubanos y españoles muy ricos. Una membresía mixta en cuanto a nacionalidad, pero homogénea en su condición social y de clase. No pocos grandes negocios nacieron en los salones de esta sociedad que todavía en 1963, cree recordar el escribidor, mantenía a su portero uniformado y mostraba la bandera de las barras y las estrellas detrás del vidrio de la entrada. El aire acondicionado trabajaba con tal potencia que cuando se abría la puerta el frío se sentía en la acera.(Continuará).
