CUBA PREMIERE THE FILM “PAPA”. THE DARK YEARS OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY.
‘Papa’, a film about the last years of alcoholism and collapse of Ernest Hemingway in Cuba circumvents the embargo and greet the new era of change on the island.

CUBA ESTRENA EL FILME “PAPA”. LOS AÑOS OSCUROS DE HEMINGWAY.
‘Papa’, un filme sobre los últimos años de alcoholismo y derrumbe de Ernest Hemingway en Cuba sortea el embargo y saluda los nuevos tiempos de cambio en la isla.
“Papa”, la producción de EE.UU sobre los años más oscuros de la vida de Ernest Hemingway que logró esquivar el embargo para rodar en Cuba después de medio siglo sin rodajes estadounidenses, se ha estrenado en primicia en la isla, lugar en el que el escritor encontró su “verdadero hogar”, reveló su nieta Mariel Hemingway, que tiene un papel en la cinta. “La película revela algo desconocido para mucha gente en EE.UU, que es la conexión tan profunda que mi abuelo tenía con Cuba. Esta isla fue para él un hogar durante más de 30 años y consideraba a los cubanos su familia”, dijo Mariel a la prensa en la presentación del filme en el pasado Festival de Cine de La Habana.
La película pudo verse en primicia mundial dentro del programa del festival, tres meses antes del estreno oficial en salas estadounidenses de esta cinta, uno de los pocos ejemplos de producción compartida entre Cuba y EE.UU -también Canadá-, gestada antes del deshielo diplomático entre ambos países.
Para Mariel, pasar en Cuba un mes de rodaje en los mismos lugares que frecuentaba Hemingway, como su casa en Finca Vigía o el bar La Floridita, fue “una experiencia increíble” que le permitió “revivir” la vida de su abuelo, al nunca conoció ya que se suicidó en julio de 1961, cuatro meses antes de que ella naciera. “Ya había estado en Cuba hace trece años y recorrí todos los lugares relacionados con la vida de mi abuelo. Pero esta segunda vez, para el rodaje, fue como si él cobrara vida otra vez”, explicó Mariel sobre la experiencia de regresar a La Habana, en abril y mayo de 2014 para la filmación.
La película se centra en los últimos tres años de la vida del escritor -interpretado por el veterano Adrian Sparks-, una etapa oscura en la que Hemingway se sumergió en la depresión y el alcoholismo, contada a través del testimonio de su amigo, el periodista del Miami Herald, Denne Bart Petitclerc, al que da vida el actor Giovanni Ribisi.
“Para mí era vital que el rodaje fuera en Cuba, donde ocurrió realmente todo lo que está en el guión, donde están todos los lugares a los que ese periodista tuvo acceso de la vida de Hemingway y su mujer Marie”, explicó a la prensa el realizador Bob Yari, que ha producido medio centenar de películas, pero que en esta ocasión se adentra en el mundo de la dirección. “Ver a Adrian (Sparks) sentado en el mismo despacho de Finca Vigía en el que Hemingway escribió muchas de sus obras, con exactamente la misma máquina de escribir que él usó, fue mágico”. Para Sparks, quien da vida al mítico escritor, el principal reto de la película fue hacer al personaje “agradable”, lograr que el público empatizara con él, ya que el guión muestra a un Hemingway “complicado, alcoholizado y roto, con una carga emocional muy fuerte”. ‘Papa’, que alude al apodo con el que el Nobel de Literatura era conocido en la isla, pudo ser filmada en Cuba gracias a que el Departamento del Tesoro eliminó algunos obstáculos del embargo que hubiera impedido el proyecto, aunque impuso límites al presupuesto.
La primera barrera se eludió al conseguir que la cinta, aunque es ficción, se considerara un documental, ya que es relato de eventos reales que ocurrieron en la isla, contados a través del testimonio del periodista del Miami Herald; por lo que de momento es complicado que Hollywood halle en la isla un nuevo set de rodaje.
