The ferry service between the United States and Cuba was suspended more than 50 years after the entry into government of Fidel Castro.
Mayor Carlos Gimenez said about 14,000 people travel to Cuba every week from Miami Airport and therefore “has to look to the future.”
Officials from the Port of Miami are prepared when the business operates, while ferry companies interested in initiating travel to the island also from other ports like Key West, Everglades and Manatee, on the west coast of Florida.
According to Notimex, the travel would be allowed through specific licenses for services of passenger ferries to Cuba, which would be granted as part of the relaxation of US policy toward the island by the Bureau of Financial Assets (OFAC).
The plans must go through the Commission of the Miami-Dade County, where political debate is expected, although it remains unclear if the government of Havana must allow the ferry service to its ports.

Autoridades del condado Miami-Dade evalúan la construcción de la primera terminal de ferris hacia Cuba, informó el miércoles el alcalde Carlos Giménez, citado por la agencia Notimex.
Giménez expuso que los planes incluyen un predio en una zona negada al futbolista británico David Beckham para edificar un estadio de esa especialidad deportiva en Miami.
En unas declaraciones emitidas por el noticiario AN5 de América TV, el alcalde dijo que se tiene “que aumentar la infraestructura de ese puerto y esa es la única cosa que se puede poner ahí que tiene un uso marítimo en esa parte del condado”.
El servicio de transbordadores entre Estados Unidos y Cuba fue suspendido hace más de 50 años tras la llegada al Gobierno de Fidel Castro.
El alcalde Carlos Giménez dijo que unas 14.000 personas viajan a Cuba todas las semanas desde el Aeropuerto de Miami y por ello “se tiene que ver hacia el futuro”.
Los funcionarios del Puerto de Miami están preparados para cuando este negocio opere, mientras compañías de ferris tienen interés en iniciar viajes a la Isla, también desde otros puertos como Key West, Everglades y Manatee, en la costa oeste de Florida.
De acuerdo con Notimex, los viajes serían permitidos gracias a licencias específicas para servicios de ferris de pasajeros a Cuba, que serían otorgadas por la Oficina de Control de Activos Financieros (OFAC), como parte de la flexibilización de las políticas estadounidenses hacia la Isla.
Los planes deberán pasar por la Comisión del Condado Miami-Dade, donde se espera un debate político, aunque sigue sin aclararse si el Gobierno de La Habana permitirá la entrada del servicio de ferris a sus puertos.
