El crack del béisbol, hasta ahora orgullo nacional del deporte cubano, nombrado en la isla mejor deportista del 2015, se fue a hurtadillas del hotel llevándose con él a su hermano Lourdes, de 22 años, una de las grandes promesas del béisbol cubano. Llevándose presente y futuro del deporte más amado en la Gran Antilla.

La otra pista sobre lo sucedido la ha dado el embajador de Cuba en la República Dominicana, Carlos de la Nuez. El diplomático ha denunciado públicamente que existen pruebas de que a los Gourriel los ayudó a escapar un militar de la Fuerza Aérea Dominicana llamado William Solís. Desde que se supo de la fuga de los hermanos, trascendió que se habían ido subiéndose a una camioneta con distintivo militar. De la Nuez ha afirmado que hay un vídeo que prueba la presencia de Solís en el hotel el día de la deserción de los talentos cubanos. También los habría visitado otro día, antes de la fuga, en el mismo hotel. El Gobierno de Cuba ya había comentado que durante las jornadas en las que la Selección estuvo concentrada en Santo Domingo para jugar la Serie del Caribe, varios personajes vinculados al “robo de atletas” habían estado rondando (“asediando”, en sus palabras) a los peloteros cubanos.
Yulieski Gourriel era material valioso. Deportivo, simbólico y económico. La presión de Cuba para saber lo que ocurrió, y las revelaciones del embajador De la Nuez, han hecho que el Gobierno dominicano haya puesto en marcha una investigación del Ministerio de Defensa y de sus órganos de inteligencia para averiguar si en efecto uno de los suyos fue complice del vuelo de los Gourriel.
