EIGHT AIRLINES COMPANIES REQUEST FLYING TO CUBA.
US airlines flying to Cuba seeking from its main bases of operation, with Havana as the most popular destination. At least eight requests filed Wednesday with the Department of Transportation United States outlining what routes they would like to cover, reports the AP.
According to the AP, the applicants are American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Silver Airways.
The Government will devote the coming months to review applications and is expected to grant the permissions the summer of this year. Flights to smaller cities if they are not contested and lack any contentious issue could be approved much earlier.
Only 20 of these flights may go to Havana, in addition to the current 10 to 15 charter flights per day. The rest would fly to other Cuban cities.
Most proposed by US aircraft carriers would transport about 160 passengers.
American Airlines was the most enterprising airline in its determination, requesting more than half of the possible permits to Havana, plus the service to other five smaller Cuban cities. The company has a huge hub in Miami, residence of the largest Cuban-American population.
Meanwhile, United Airlines announced it requested permission to perform daily commercial flights from Newark (New Jersey), Houston (Texas), Chicago (Illinois) and Washington.
The executive said the company wants to be the first US airline to offer daily flights to Jose Marti airport in Havana.
Depending on the authorization of the federal government, United would conduct 11 weekly flights back and forth from Liberty Airport in Newark, and have other frequencies on Saturdays from airports George Bush, of Houston; Dulles, Washington, and O’Hare, Chicago.
The company reported that most of the flights, which would be held on Boeing 737-800 aircraft with room for 154 passengers, will depart from Newark because it is in that region where most of the Cuban-American community lives outside Miami.

Compañías aéreas de Estados Unidos buscan volar a Cuba desde sus principales bases de operación, con La Habana como el destino más popular. Al menos ocho presentaron el miércoles solicitudes ante el Departamento de Transporte de Estados Unidos perfilando qué rutas les gustaría cubrir, reporta la AP.
Según la AP, las solicitantes son American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines y Silver Airways.
El Gobierno dedicará los próximos meses a revisar las solicitudes y se espera que otorgue los permisos el verano de este año. Los vuelos a ciudades más pequeñas —si no son disputadas y carecen de cualquier asunto contencioso— podrían ser aprobados mucho antes.
Solo 20 de esos vuelos pueden ir a La Habana, además de los actuales de 10 a 15 vuelos chárter por día. El resto volaría a otras ciudades cubanas.

Por su parte, United Airlines anunció que pidió autorización para realizar vuelos comerciales diarios desde Newark (Nueva Jersey), Houston (Texas), Chicago (Illinois) y Washington.
El ejecutivo manifestó que la empresa quiere ser la primera aerolínea estadounidense en ofrecer vuelos diarios al aeropuerto José Martí, de La Habana.
Dependiendo de la autorización del Gobierno federal, United realizaría 11 vuelos semanales de ida y vuelta desde el aeropuerto Liberty, en Newark, y tendría otras frecuencias los sábados desde los aeropuertos George Bush, de Houston; Dulles, de Washington, y O’Hare, de Chicago.
