NEW TELEPHONE SERVICE BETWEEN U.S. AND CUBA.
A week after the arrival of President Barack Obama to Havana, the Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba SA (ETECSA) announced Monday an agreement with the US company Verizon Partner Solutions, which will expand the service direct calls between the two countries.
“This agreement initially allowed to offer services of phone calls, through direct interconnection between both countries and will start operations once it expires the period of implementation and technical tests carried out by the nations,” he said through a Etecsa statement.
The announcement comes a week before Obama’s unprecedented visit to the island, scheduled from 20 to 22 this month.
After he began the process of diplomatic thaw between the two countries in December 2014, telecommunications companies of the two countries agreed to establish a direct telecommunications service.
For more than 50 years, the telephone service between Cuba and the United States was conducted through third countries, a major traffic if you consider that the Cuban community in the United States around two million people.
On February 20, 2015, ETECSA signed a first agreement with IDT Domestic Telcom for direct voice service, activated a month later.
While the November 2 last, the Cuban state monopoly signed a second agreement with Sprint Comunication Company to make and receive direct calls between the two countries, sending text messages (SMS) between mobile phones and roaming for Americans visiting that nation.
Interview with Obama on relations with Cuba.
Obama was convinced that the next US government will lift the embargo against Cuba.
The statement was made in an interview with CNN in Spanish released Monday.
“My firm prediction is that at some point the government of the next president, whether Democrat or Republican, will repeal the embargo,” he said.
The US president will travel next to the first lady, Michelle, to Cuba to seal the process of rapprochement between Washington and Havana, after half a century of enmity.
“It makes sense for us to sell in Cuba, doing business with Cubans, show them our business practices, how we treat employees, how we focus on human rights issues, which will help produce the kinds of changes needed” , said Obama.
Imposed by Washington in 1962, the embargo prohibits most US trade with Cuba and can only be lifted by Congress, now dominated by Republican opposition.
Obama called on lawmakers to reverse the embargo, while issued a series of regulatory reforms that are under authority of the executive branch, to ease some sanctions.

A una semana de la llegada del presidente Barack Obama a La Habana, la Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A. (Etecsa) anunció este lunes un acuerdo con la compañía estadounidense Verizon Partner Solutions, el cual ampliará el servicio de llamadas directas entre los dos países.
“Este acuerdo permitirá inicialmente ofrecer servicios de llamadas telefónicas, a través de la interconexión directa entre ambos países y entrará en operaciones, una vez que culmine el período de implementación y pruebas técnicas que realizan las naciones”, informó a través de un comunicado Etecsa.
El anuncio se da una semana antes de la inédita visita de Obama a la isla, prevista del 20 al 22 de este mes.
Después de que comenzó el proceso de deshielo diplomático entre los dos países, en diciembre del 2014, empresas de telecomunicaciones de los dos países acordaron el establecimiento de un servicio directo de telecomunicaciones.
Durante más de 50 años, el servicio telefonico entre Cuba y Estados Unidos se realizó a través de terceros países, un tráfico importante si se tiene en cuenta que la comunidad cubana en Estados Unidos ronda los dos millones de personas.
El 20 de febrero del 2015, Etecsa suscribió un primer acuerdo con IDT Domestic Telcom para el servicio de voz directo, activado un mes después.
Mientras que el 2 de noviembre pasado, el monopolio estatal cubano suscribió un segundo acuerdo con Sprint Comunication Company para realizar y recibir llamadas directas entre los dos países, el envío de mensajes de texto (sms) entre teléfonos móviles y el servicio de roaming para los norteamericanos que visiten esa nación.
Entrevista a Obama sobre relaciones con Cuba.
Obama se mostró convencido de que el próximo gobierno estadounidense levantará el embargo contra Cuba.
La afirmación la realizó en una entrevista a la cadena CNN En Español divulgada este lunes.
“Mi firme predicción es que en algún momento el gobierno del próximo presidente, ya sea demócrata o republicano, derogará el embargo”, dijo.
El presidente estadounidense viajará junto a la primera dama, Michelle, a Cuba para sellar el proceso de acercamiento entre Washington y La Habana, tras medio siglo de enemistad.
“Tiene sentido para nosotros poder vender en Cuba, hacer negocios con los cubanos, mostrarles nuestras prácticas comerciales, cómo tratamos a los trabajadores, cómo nos enfocamos en los temas de derechos humanos, lo que ayudará a producir los tipos de cambios que se necesitan”, mencionó Obama.
Impuesto por Washington en 1962, el embargo prohíbe casi todo comercio de Estados Unidos con Cuba y solo puede ser levantado por el Congreso, actualmente dominado por la oposición republicana.
Obama llamó a los legisladores a revertir el embargo, mientras que emitió una serie de reformas regulatorias que están bajo atribuciones del poder Ejecutivo, para flexibilizar algunas sanciones.
