Durante su estancia en Cuba el presidente norteamericano habló abiertamente sobre “Democracia” en el futuro de Cuba y lo hizo en dos eventos. El primero fue un discurso retransmitido por televisión a todo el país desde el Teatro Nacional de La Habana, en el que estaba presente la plana mayor del Partido Comunista Cubano, empezando por el propio Castro. Sin llegar a criticar directamente a Cuba, y poniendo un cuidado exquisito en el respeto a la soberanía del país–“los cambios que vengan serán decididos por Cuba su su pueblo”– , Obama trazó una comparación indirecta entre ambas naciones en la que la isla no salió bien parada.”Ni aunque el embargo se acabara mañana, Cuba podría desarrollar todo su potencial”, dijo el presidente de EEUU, en un sutil recordatorio de que La Habana es también responsable de sus problemas y de su aislamiento del resto del mundo, en especial en un área de la que la Casa Blanca ha hecho bandera: el acceso libre a internet. Y por ahí siguió, mientras los aplausos de la audiencia, que habían empezado siendo ensordecedores, se iban apagando más y más, a medida que Obama iba pronunciando palabras que no asociaba directamente en ningún caso al régimen de Casto, pero que tienen un toque de tabú en Cuba: “democracia”, “debate”, “detenciones arbitrarias”, “Derechos Humanos”, “elecciones libres y democráticas”, “presos políticos”…La clave del discurso de Obama fue que la democracia ha permitido a Estados Unidos mejorar como país. Y que también ayudaría a Cuba. El presidente se puso a sí mismo como ejemplo de esa situación, al auto calificarse como “un niño de raza mezclada criado por madre soltera sin mucho dinero” que ha llegado al máximo poder político del país. Y recordó que sus posibles sucesores pueden ser “dos cubanoamericanos en el Partido Republicano que van contra el legado de un presidente negro, que a su vez quieren continuar un socialista democrático y una mujer. Quién hubiera imaginado eso en 1959”, el año en el que Fidel Castro tomó el poder y se inició el divorcio entre ambos países.
