El 22 de marzo, Cuba y Estados Unidos, que están embarcados desde hace un año en un complejo proceso político para acabar con más de medio siglo de enemistad, se verán las caras en el Estadio Latinoamericano de La Habana, que está siendo engalanado para la cita.

El juego de la Selección cubana con los Tampa Bay Rays de las Grandes Ligas cerrará la histórica visita de dos días de Obama, la primera de un presidente estadounidense en 88 años, y pese a su carácter amistoso dejará huella.
Y en la tribuna estarán Obama y, probablemente, Raúl Castro para constatarlo.
“Va a ser un poco diferente”, admite Omar Linares, de 47 años, el bateador más importante de la historia reciente del béisbol cubano y quien forma parte del cuerpo técnico de la Selección que se medirá con la novena estadounidense.
Diecisiete años después de aquel preliminar juego con los Orioles del Baltimore en 1999, el béisbol, deporte de masas en ambos países, vuelve a saltar al campo diplomático, pero esta vez para coronar la reconciliación por la visita de Obama.
El juego será televisado en directo y en forma simultánea para los dos países.
“La parte del deporte se piensa en la política, pero, en este caso, nunca se lleva al terreno; la gente sale al terreno a jugar béisbol”, manifestó Orestes Kindelán, el mayor jonronero del béisbol cubano y quien también integra el cuerpo técnico que prepara el juego del próximo martes.
Linares y Kindelán jugaron contra los Orioles y confían en que más allá del impacto político, el amistoso contribuya a despejar el futuro del béisbol cubano, que quedó atascado en la pugna política entre ambos países.
Cuba, que eliminó el béisbol rentado en 1961, enfrenta hace décadas la fuga de sus peloteros, que huyen a Estados Unidos atraídos por intermediarios o cazatalentos que les ofrecen salarios millonarios.
Solo en el 2015 más de un centenar de peloteros abandonaron Cuba, que a causa de las “deserciones” ha visto caer su desempeño de forma dramática.
El Gobierno cubano castiga a los “desertores” cerrándoles la entrada a la Isla por un tiempo e impidiéndoles vestir de nuevo la camiseta cubana.
Para jugar en Grandes Ligas, un cubano debe ser contratado fuera de su país como agente libre, debido a las restricciones que impone el embargo estadounidense vigente desde 1962.
A tono con los nuevos tiempos, el año pasado Cuba y las Grandes Ligas pusieron sobre la mesa de discusiones l a posible regularización de este tema. Hoy, a días del duelo con los Tampa Bay, los cubanos confían en que este amistoso acelere las negociaciones.
“Eso es lo que queremos nosotros y que bueno que ya parece que va a comenzar esa apertura”, dijo este miércoles Higinio Vélez, presidente de la Federación Cubana de Béisbol, al término de una visita con la prensa al Estadio Latinoamericano, considerado el templo del béisbol cubano.
“Hace falta que se logre ya, que se acaben de abrir las relaciones, para que el cubano pueda jugar en Grandes Ligas sin tener que irse de su país por balsa (…) Esto ya le pondría un punto final a estas salidas ilegales que tanto nos están haciendo daño”, afirmó de su lado Linares.
Para Kindelán, “este es el momento de dar el paso” para “que puedan los peloteros ir y venir y que se juegue la pelota sin ningún problema y apartando toda la parte política.
