She was born in Camagüey on October 3, 1916, of overwhelming joy and formidable energy, she began his artistic career in 1932 and five years later settled in the Cuban capital, where she joined several vocal groups.

The newspaper Juventud Rebelde said that the excellent talent of Batista, who had spent several days in hospital in Camagüey, “led her to share the stage with the likes of (…) Lola Flores, Charles Aznavour, Josephine Baker, and Nat King Cole “, among others.
Batista with her contralto voice remained active as a professional singer until age 94.

The remains of the singer were buried Saturday in Camagüey, 530 km east of Havana.

Batista desarrolló una carrera artística de más de siete décadas, durante las cuales llevó la música cubana a unos 20 países de América Latina, Europa y África, entre ellos México, Panamá, Colombia, España, Francia, Alemania, Italia, Egipto y Marruecos.
El diario Juventud Rebelde destacó que el excelente talento de Batista, quien llevaba varios días hospitalizada en Camagüey, “la llevó a compartir escenario con figuras de la talla de (…) Lola Flores, Charles Aznavour, Josephine Baker, y Nat King Cole”, entre otros.
Batista con su voz de contralto se mantuvo activa como cantante profesional hasta los 94 años.
Durante más de siete décadas interpretó “los más diversos géneros de la música popular cubana”, aunque fueron los ritmos de origen africano, como “la rumba y el guaguancó, los que marcaron su estilo”, destaca Cubadebate.
Entre los reconocimientos que recibió por su relevante trayectoria artística figuran el título de Hija Ilustre de la Provincia de Camagüey, la Medalla Alejo Carpentier y la Distinción por la Cultura Nacional.
Candita Batista, la “vedette negra” de Cuba, falleció el viernes a los 99 años en su natal ciudad de Camagüey, al este de La Habana.
Los restos de la cantante fueron sepultados este sábado en Camagüey, a 530 km al este de La Habana.
