HAVANA CLUB RUM AND JOSÉ ARECHABALA, MATANZAS.
Havana Club rum is marketed since 1934. But its history dates back to 1878, year in which José Arechavala opened the distillery “Vizcaya” in Cardenas, Matanzas. The name of rum responded to the traditional Cuban roots, to the capital Havana and the internationally known world of its nightclubs.
José Arechavala from Bilbao, Vizcaya, with 15 years, arrives in Havana in 1862. Sixteen years after his arrival, already operates a small distillery in the city who had chosen to settle with his family and seek his fortune: Cardenas, who was then a bustling new city, with railway, a very active port, and the new visible wealth everywhere.
In 1888 his company had grown so much that it was able to continue to prosper despite suffering a loss of more than $50,000.00 in damages caused by a terrible hurricane that struck the Township of that year…
At the beginning of the 20th century it was an important industry. In 1921, the society changed its name for the of “company Jose Arechabala S.A. had the most modern equipment, large sections of fermentation, tanks and comfortable facilities.” Stores of raw and refined sugar, refinery, distillery, jams, syrups, alcohols, molasses, maritime terminal for their exports, etc.
Among other lines of the distillery, you can highlight the “mofuco”, unbeatable fuel that began to occur in March 1932. This signature is considered a pioneer in the development of a national fuel, using alcohol as a basis.
On March 19, 1934 opens a new factory and appears a new product: Havana CLUB rum. Only the plant’s distillation, in 1950, already had the ability to produce 125,000 liters a day of special and unbeatable, as HAVANA CLUB rum and ANEJO 75 ARECHABALA rums.
In 1935 he opened, in the Palace of the counts of Bayona (born in Havana) in the Plaza of the Cathedral of Havana, his private bar and offices of this company. This building, which we will also make a publication, was built by José de Bayonne Chacón the first count of Bayona in 1720.
