The number of Cuban players to reach the major leagues increased to 23 in 2016.
The list of players Creoles Opening Day in Major amounted to more than two dozen thanks to this year defected five more than the previous. This puts them in third place, after the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, according to a release on Tuesday of ESPN.
The Yulieski Gourriel and his brother Lourdes Jr. has been one of the most high-profile defections of Cuban baseball the last year.

MLB said Monday that 238 of the 864 players on opening day lists were born outside the 50 states of the union, with the percentage rising to 27.5% from 26.5%.
The percentage is the highest since 28.2% in 2013; as the highest was in 2005 of 29.2%.
The Dominican Republic leads the list of star players, with 82; followed by Venezuela with 63; and Cuba, with 23. Puerto Rico was next with 17, the most since 2011. It is followed by Mexico (12), Japan (8) and South Korea (8). The previous maximum amount of South Korea was five.
Canada has 6; Panama 4; Colombia and Curacao 3 each; and Brazil and Taiwan 2 each.
… The MLB started to publicize data on foreigners in 1995 and since then, the Dominican Republic has been the country’s participation in the major leagues outside the United States.
A figure expected to grow
Recently, the commissioner of Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred, took part in the TV show CBS This Morning, talking about the ball game that played the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban team at the Latinoamericano stadium. This led to expectations MLB with Cuban quarry.
Manfred says hopes are pinned on an improvement in the relationship between that organization and the Cuban regime.
He said the need for a safer Cuban baseball players who want to play in the majors do not have to leave the island as did Yasiel Puig, risking their lives at sea and through the hands of smugglers route is established.
“I hope that very soon a change in the relationship between the US and Cuba to allow Cuban players come here and return to the island freely. El número de peloteros cubanos en llegar a las Grandes Ligas aumentó a 23 en 2016.
La lista de jugadores criollos el día inaugural en las Grandes ascendió a más de dos docenas gracias a que en este año desertaron cinco más que el anterior. Esto los coloca en tercer lugar, después de Dominicana y Venezuela, según un despacho de este martes de la cadena ESPN.
La de Yulieski Gourriel y su hermano Lourdes Jr. ha sido una de las deserciones más sonadas del béisbol cubano en el último año.
Las cifras ofrecidas indican que se trata de “la mayor cantidad” desde 1995, cuando la oficina del comisionado comenzó a publicar los datos.
MLB dijo el lunes que 238 de los 864 jugadores en las listas del día inaugural, nacieron fuera de los 50 estados de la unión, con el porcentaje en aumento a 27.5% desde 26.5%.
El porcentaje es el más elevado desde el 28.2% en 2013; pues el más alto fue en 2005, de 29.2%.
La República Dominicana lidera la lista de estelares peloteros, con 82; seguido por Venezuela, con 63; y Cuba, con 23. Puerto Rico fue el siguiente con 17, su mayor cantidad desde 2011. Le siguen México (12), Japón (8) y Corea del Sur (8). La máxima cantidad anterior de Corea del Sur era de cinco.

…La MLB empezó a dar a conocer los datos sobre los extranjeros en 1995 y, desde entonces, República Dominicana ha sido el país de más participación en las Grandes Ligas, aparte de Estados Unidos.
Una cifra que espera crecer
Recientemente, el comisionado de las Grandes Ligas, Rob Manfred, intervino en el programa de televisión CBS This Morning, hablando sobre el juego de pelota que disputaron los Rays de Tampa Bay y la selección cubana en el estadio Latinoamericano. Esto dio pie a las expectativas de MLB con la cantera cubana.
Manfred asegura que las esperanzas están puestas en una mejoría en la relación entre la organización que dirige y el régimen cubano.
Precisó la necesidad de que se establezca una vía más segura para que los peloteros cubanos que desean jugar en las Mayores no tengan que abandonar la isla como hizo Yasiel Puig, arriesgando su vida en el mar y pasando por manos de los traficantes de personas.
“Espero que muy pronto se produzca un cambio en la relación entre Estados Unidos y Cuba que permita a los peloteros cubanos venir aquí y regresar a la isla libremente. Las restricciones actuales han creado una situación que no es segura para los jugadores y, sinceramente, una situación con la que no queremos estar asociados”, recalcó el comisionado.
