El 4 de junio de 1966 se abrió la Heladería Coppelia en La Habana nombre sugerido por Celia Sanchez Manduley, secretaria de la presidencia y amiga íntima muchos años de Fidel Castro en alusión su ballet favorito Coppelia.Lo curioso a que este bello establecimiento monumental no se inauguró nunca de manera oficial. Allí estuvo desde 1886 el Hospital Reina Mercedes demolido en 1954, para levantar otro hospital que no se hizo Se edifico entonces el Parque INIT,consistente en un pabellón turístico donde se reproducían pequeñas montañas, escenario flotante, un lago artificial, cafetería, bar y restaurante..Al año lo desactivaron y quedo en su lugar el Centro Recreativo Nocturno hasta 1966 cuando se edifico Coppelia o La Catedral del helado.
Coppelia, ubicada en el corazón de la capital, reabrió sus puertas después de varias semanas de reparaciones. Las obras se enmarcan en la celebración del 50 cumpleaños del famoso espacio.
La reapertura de Coppelia ha dado pie a muchos reportajes en la prensa oficial. El viernes pasado, la instalación fue visitada por un grupo selecto de funcionarios y más tarde se permitió la entrada del público. Los clientes pudieron comprobar que, tras la nueva capa de pintura y las áreas verdes revitalizadas, la calidad del helado que se oferta en moneda nacional sigue siendo baja.
Este martes en la tarde, una larga cola se extendía bajo el sol a las afueras de la también conocida como Catedral del helado. Sin embargo, los que conocieron el céntrico local durante sus primeras décadas de vida se quejaban de que la remodelación no ha sido acompañada por una mejora de los productos, tanto en su presentación como en su sabor y variedad.
En el piso superior, conocido como La Torre y bellamente concebido por el arquitecto Mario Girona, se mantiene la venta regulada a solo “dos especialidades por persona”, según comentó una empleada. Sin embargo, por un par de billetes deslizados en las manos correctas, un cliente se puede llevar a casa todo el helado que quiera, siempre con el sigilo de no “llenar los pozuelos a la vista de los jefes”, aclara la camarera.
Una de las novedades que se agradecen tras los días de cierre es la presencia en La Torre de platos de loza blanca que sustituyen a los de plástico que, no obstante, se mantienen en las llamadas “canchas” de la planta baja. En la primera semana de reapertura, todavía los empleados que despachan el helado no han integrado del todo la técnica de servir bolas vacías por dentro, una especialidad única de la venta de helado en Cuba y que ha caracterizado por años a la célebre heladería.
Un grupo de turistas preguntaba con ingenuidad a los clientes por qué hacían cola si a pocos metros tenían un área completamente vacía con una oferta más amplia en variedades de helado. Un joven universitario, que había asistido con un grupo de estudiantes de la escuela de Filosofía, explicó a los extranjeros la diferencia entre consumir en pesos cubanos o pesos convertibles. “Aquel en chavitos sabe mejor, pero no hay quien lo pague”, sentenció el joven.
Las áreas arregladas en esta ocasión son La Cancha y La Torre, junto a la imponente escalera blanca que da acceso al primer piso, la cúpula, el techo y las típicas ventanas de madera y cristal, también ubicadas en la parte superior. El programa de remodelación incluye espacios como la barra en la planta baja y los baños, que comenzarán a ser restaurados en las próximas semanas.
Sin embargo, para muchos clientes las mejoras no deberían quedarse en la apariencia física de Coppelia, sino que deberían tener como fin la recuperación del prestigio del que una vez gozó el espacio, ahora “aguado” como su helado, por la mala calidad, el trato poco profesional de sus empleados y las medidas absurdas implementadas en sus servicios, entre ellas, el cierre del hermoso conjunto al paso de los transeúntes. A partir de ahora, solo se puede entrar después de hacer la larga fila a las afueras de la Catedral del Helado que parece haber perdido el rumbo.
