LEGENDS OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ISLAND OF CUBA. (Photos).
A curious legend tells of the formation of the Cuban soil.
“… It is well known that for the Indians the Sun, the Moon and the stars came out of the caves of Jobobaba, on the island of “La Española”. In these caves inhabited Maniatibel, junior God who lived in perpetual darkness, until one day, overlooking the mouth of the cave, discovered the light and fell in love with her. It possessed it, we ignore as, and she had a daughter, Cuba.
When this Virgin was already a beautiful maiden, pursued the gods with their lustful desires; but the daughter of light, could not be tainted by the carnal contact. Run by all areas of the “Turey”, the sky according to the tainos, not to fall into the arms of his pursuers, tore the clouds and threw himself into the sea. There she was asleep, gently rocking waves.
Her tears were rivers; her breasts emerged the mountains, their hair forests; their eyelashes Palm trees; and it was the most beautiful divine origin and better lands, where eternally should shine the Sun and bloom spring…”
This beautiful legend is collected by José Güell and rented in their “American legends” (Madrid, 1856), but there are many other legends that could tell you, like in your poetic spirit and delicate invention of these reveries of the tradition. But the real history of our first settlers little or nothing has reached us. Only news confusing carried pages of the chroniclers of discovery, with frequent contradictions.
From the time of the conquest, are known incidents of Hatuey, than defeated by the Spaniards and that, before being burned at the stake, show the cross for conversion so that he could win the sky, stubbornly refusing, knowing that this same sky were their oppressors; or the massacre of Indians which gave name to the city of Matanzas. But we know little more.
For Güell, the real heroes and symbols of the Cuban national history were his victims, proposing an interpretation radically different colon and their legacies. Instead of a benefactor, Columbus considered guilty of exterminating an entire civilization from the face of the Earth, allowing them may be operated and forced to work in their own lands as slaves and to adopt so many cruelties, depopulated the island at the edge of the sword of their sailors and soldiers.
ORIGIN OF CUBA – LEGEND
Of our siboneyes commented “… it was more tame, more generous and more hospitable world peoples…” the siboneyes excelled the other Indians of America claiming that it has not existed in any other country of the universe a social State so perfect in its kind. They did not need the impressive monuments and buildings that bequeathed to other pre-Columbian cultures, because with respect to human happiness, were much higher than the rest, had paradise.
José Güell and rented, was born in Havana in 1818 and is baptized in the parish church of the Holy Spirit on September 14, 1818. Son of a catalan father and native mother of the town of Guanabacoa. He attended elementary school at colegio Cubí y Soler and secondary education at the seminary. In 1838 he graduated as a doctor in Civil law at the University of Barcelona. He collaborates in the newspaper the Garland (1842), Matanzas.
Despite all the obstacles classist, she marries, in Valladolid, María Josefa Fernanda Borbón and Bourbon, sister of the King consort of Isabel II, don Francisco de Asís of Bourbon. He is banished and moved to France, where he lived four years and conspired in favor of the General isabelists O’donell and Espartero. Along with them, in 1854, it contributes to the revolt of Valladolid, a city that is later appointed as a Deputy for the Constituent Cortes.
From this rostrum I made public and reaffirmed that his marriage “aristocratic” not had away him from their democratic ideas “.. .soy man of the people, come here by the people and for the people…”.
After the peace of Zanjón, in 1879, in Cuba, he was elected Senator by the “Universidad de La Habana”, always advocating the abolition of slavery, and also renewed the project already started since 1864, erect a large building for the University of Havana.
As in the history of the first settlers of the island, also is little known to us the life of this Cuban, that independent to its link with the Spanish power, he had a look so loving and endearing about the land where he was born. Serve this publication as a remembrance and tribute.

LEYENDAS DE EL ORIGEN DE LA ISLA DE CUBA. (Fotos).
Una curiosa leyenda nos cuenta la formación de la tierra cubana.
“…Sabido es que para los indios el sol, la luna y las estrellas salían de las cuevas de Jobobaba, en la isla de “La Española”. En estas cuevas habitaba Maniatibel, dios subalterno que vivía en perpetua oscuridad, hasta que un día asomándose a la boca de la cueva, descubrió la luz y se enamoró de ella. La poseyó, ignoramos como, y de ella tuvo una hija, Cuba.
Cuando esta virgen era ya una hermosa doncella, la persiguieron los dioses con sus lúbricos deseos; pero la hija de la luz, no podía ser manchada por el contacto carnal. Huyendo por todos los ámbitos del “Turey”, el cielo según los taínos, para no caer en los brazos de sus perseguidores, rasgó las nubes y se arrojó al mar. Allí quedó dormida, meciéndola suavemente las ondas.
Sus lágrimas fueron ríos; de sus senos surgieron los montes, de sus cabellos los bosques; de sus pestañas las palmeras; y fue por su origen divino la más hermosa y mejor y de las tierras, en donde eternamente debía brillar el sol y florecer la primavera…”
Esta hermosa leyenda es recogida por José Güell y Renté en sus “Leyendas Americanas” (Madrid, 1856), pero existen muchas otras leyendas que les podría relatar, semejantes en su espíritu poético y delicada invención de estos ensueños de la tradición. Pero de la historia verdadera de nuestros primeros pobladores poco o nada ha llegado hasta nosotros. Solo noticias confusas llevadas a las páginas de los cronistas del descubrimiento, con frecuentes contradicciones.
De la época de la Conquista, son conocidos los incidentes de Hatuey, que vencido por los españoles y que, antes de ser quemado en la hoguera, le mostraran la cruz para su conversión a fin de que pudiese ganar el cielo, negándose obstinadamente, sabiendo que a ese mismo cielo iban sus opresores; o el de la hecatombe de indios que dio nombre a la ciudad de Matanzas. Pero poco más conocemos.
Para Güell, los verdaderos héroes y símbolos de la historia nacional cubana fueron sus víctimas, proponiendo una interpretación radicalmente distinta de Colón y de sus legados. En lugar de un benefactor, consideraba a Colón culpable de exterminar a una civilización entera de la faz de la Tierra, permitiendo que se les explotara y obligara a trabajar en sus propias tierras como esclavos y que aprobara tantas crueldades, despoblando la Isla al filo de la espada de sus marineros y soldados.
ORIGEN DE CUBA -LEYENDA
De nuestros siboneyes comentaba “… era de los pueblos más mansos, más generosos y más hospitalarios del mundo…” los siboneyes sobresalían a los demás indios de América afirmando que no ha existido en ningún país del Universo un estado social tan perfecto en su género. No necesitaron de los impresionantes monumentos y construcciones que legaron otras culturas precolombinas, porque respecto a la felicidad humana, eran muy superiores al resto, tenían el paraíso.
José Güell y Renté, nace en La Habana en 1818 y es bautizado en la iglesia parroquial del Espíritu Santo el 14 de septiembre de 1818. Hijo de padre catalán y de madre oriunda de la villa de Guanabacoa. Cursó la primaria en el colegio de Cubí y Soler y el bachillerato en el Seminario. En 1838 se graduó de doctor en Derecho Civil en la Universidad de Barcelona. Colabora en el periódico La Guirnalda (1842), de Matanzas.
A pesar de todos los obstáculos clasistas, contrae matrimonio, en Valladolid, con María Josefa Fernanda Borbón y Borbón, hermana del rey consorte de Isabel II, don Francisco de Asís de Borbón. Es desterrado y se traslada a Francia, donde residió cuatro años y conspiró a favor de los generales isabelinos O’Donell y Espartero. Junto a ellos, en 1854, contribuye a la sublevación de Valladolid, ciudad en que poco después es designado como diputado para las Cortes Constituyentes.
Desde esta tribuna hizo público y reafirmó que su matrimonio “aristocrático” no le había alejado de sus ideas democráticas “…soy hombre del pueblo, venido aquí por el pueblo y para el pueblo…”.
Después de la paz del Zanjón, en 1879, en Cuba, fue electo senador por la “Universidad de La Habana”, abogando siempre por la abolición de la esclavitud, y también renovó el proyecto ya iniciado desde 1864, de erigir un gran edificio para la Universidad de La Habana.
Al igual que de la historia de los primeros pobladores de nuestra Isla, también es poco conocido por nosotros la vida de este cubano, que independiente a su vínculo con el poder español, tuvo una mirada tan amorosa y entrañable sobre la tierra que le vio nacer. Sirva esta publicación como recuerdo y homenaje.
