EDELMIRA SAMPEDRO and ALFONSO DE BORBÓN: A Kingdom for Love.
Edelmira Sampedro and Robato was born in the city of Sagua la Grande, Cuba in March 1906; after a good education and a trip to Lausanne Switzerland met who would be king of Spain, Alfonso, Prince of Asturias in 1933.

La Cubana EDELMIRA SAMPEDRO y el Español ALFONSO DE BORBÓN: Un Reino por un Amor.
Edelmira Sampedro y Robato nació en la ciudad de Sagua la Grande, Cuba en Marzo de 1906; después de una esmerada educación y en un viaje a Lausanne Suiza conoció al que sería rey de España Alfonso, príncipe de Asturias en 1933.
Alfonso se enamoró de la cubana con tal fuerza que pidió el que su futuro reinado fuese anulado a favor de otro de sus hermanos, Juan, el unico que no era hemofílico, históricamente una gran desgracia de esta real familia española.
El Amor pudo más que el reinado de España.
La Puchunga, como se le conocía a Edelmira en la familia, no es del agrado del rey ni del resto de parientes. aun así el infante Alfonso es nombrado por su padre con el título real de Conde de Covadonga, emblema hereditario que llevó Edelmira, Condesa de Covadonga hasta su muerte en 1994 en Miami, Florida.
La condesa era la hija de un comerciante cubano, Luciano Pablo de Sampedro y Ocejo, después dividir con guion a De Sampedro-Ocejo, y la esposa Edelmira Robato y Turro, después dividir con guion Robato-Turro. Ella era prima del admirado en Cuba y gran intelectual Jorge Mañach y Robato. Ella se reunió con el príncipe en un sanatorio de Lausanne, donde estaba siendo tratado por su hemofilia. Historia del Borbon “Oculto”

En 1987, el Borbón oculto había desvelado sus presuntos orígenes en una entrevista en el periódico local, en la que declaró que había nacido en Lausana (Suiza), que su padre era el príncipe de Asturias, que había fallecido en Miami y que aprendió varios idiomas en el colegio.
El periodista José María Zavala, experto en los Borbones, entrevistó a Alfonso de Bourbon en su casa de La Jolla (California). Y así lo describió:
‘Alrededor de 1,80 metros de estatura; era más bien enjuto, enfundado en un traje azul a juego con la corbata de franjas con la enseña española; la flor de lis, símbolo de los Borbones, relucía en el ojal de su americana. El bigotillo, encanecido a su edad, y la frente ancha recordaban también al monarca y a quien él decía ser su padre, el príncipe de Asturias; igual que su sonrisa pícara y entrañable a la vez. El perfil netamente borbónico constituía otra prueba física palpable de su filiación; lo mismo que sus ojos, más azules aún que su pretendida sangre azul, idénticos a los del príncipe de Asturias, heredados a su vez por éste de la reina Victoria Eugenia. Su hablar era pausado y su entonación, armoniosa, con acento afrancesado. Era atento y ceremonioso: el anfitrión perfecto, que una y otra vez insistía en que “mi casa es su casa’.
Sus padres, afirmaba don Alfonso, eran el príncipe y Edelmira Sampedro, que lo habían entregado a unas monjas en Suiza. Fueron éstas quienes le revelaron su linaje. Aprendió varios idiomas en el colegio (inglés, francés, español, alemán), lo que le permitió ganarse la vida como traductor de la ONU en Nueva York. En los años 70 se mudó a La Jolla. Estaba soltero y le reconoció a Zavala que vivía “del seguro [social]’.
Jamás se reunió con sus padres: Alfonso murió en 1938, cuando él tenía unos seis años, pero Edelmira vivó hasta 1994 y murió en Florida. También afirmó que en 1969 había visitado a sus tíos Juan –en Estoril– y Jaime –en París–, y mostró a Zavala una felicitación navideña enviada por este último.
Pese a su empeño en presumir de progenitor de sangre real y a la Constitución española, que elimina definitivamente las diferencias entre hijos legítimos e ilegítimos, Alfonso de Bourbon se ratificó delante de Zavala en no reclamar el reconocimiento judicial de su apellido, a diferencia de Leandro Borbón Ruiz-Moragas, hijo de Alfonso XIII con la actriz Carmen Ruiz-Moragas.
¿Cuáles eran las pruebas que aducía Alfonso de Bourbon a favor de su parentesco? La primera, su sorprendente parecido con su supuesto abuelo Alfonso XIII, que se aprecia en las fotografías. Y la segunda, añadimos nosotros, los abundantes bastardos engendrados por los Borbones desde Isabel II.
Al menos, le reconoció a Zavala que no tenía rencor a sus supuestos padres:
“No quiero enjuiciar a mi madre, pero a las mujeres cubanas, aunque sean muy lindas y encantadoras, les gusta mucho divertirse. Igual que a mi abuelo Alfonso XIII, que en paz descanse; mientras el rey gozó de buena salud, el dinero que tenía lo gastaba en night-clubs. De todas formas, le recuerdo que Nuestro Señor Jesucristo dijo muy claramente: “No juzguéis, y no seréis juzgados”.
Cuando se conoce el trato que en las familias reales se da los bastardos o a los rivales, uno se alegra de ser plebeyo… o simple hidalgo todo lo más, como Don Quijote.”
La cubana Edelmira Sampedro, condesa de Covadonga, nunca mas se casó y guardo un libro de sus memorias muy escondido y el que no se publicó nunca. Esta enterrada al final de la calle principal de Woodlawn Park Cemetery en Miami, Florida junto a los restos de su hermana mayor Elizarda Sampedro, ambas pueden ser encontradas en la Section 17, # 38.
Una historia digna de una gran novela donde seguro jugarian los celos, la falsa hereditum, la envidia y ante todo el amor que le costó a Alfonso lo que hubiera podido ser el posible y futuro reino español entonces.
