HOLLYWOOD concentrate interest on CUBA.
So far the 2016 has gone all in Cuba. Little by little, the world has taken to Havana as a center of the arts and entertainment world. The concert of The Rolling Stones, the fashion show of the French House Channel in the heart of the capital, Fast 8 filming as well as the visit of the Pope Francisco and other renowned international personalities – also the Kardashian loomed noses by the island – have been unprecedented and historical events.
Little by little we are seeing how Cuba begins to become a focal point for the arts, and there heard talk of a new phenomenon called Habanawood. So eat the India has Bollywood, we are suede on the birth of Havana as a hub of the Caribbean theater. We are confident that as more and more companies in Hollywood and the world move to the largest island will be the positioning of Cuba as a Mecca of the seventh art. But make clear that still remains a long way to go.
The first lucky were the actors in the cast of House of Lies, starring Don Cheadle and broadcast by Showtime television series. Now follows the shift to the super franchise of Fast and Furious, filming is underway in the heart of the Cuban capital. In a message posted on YouTube, Vin Diesel commented: “we are in a place that no one would have believed possible. We are in Havana, Cuba. And you can see the beautiful thing is, with all these wonderful people.” This is just the beginning because it says that Transformers 5 will be partly shot in the Caribbean country.
Cuba historical value, it is indisputable that we see how shooting teams going directly from the United States are taking advantage of that visual touch offering Havana, with its streets by the passage of time and lack of care, collection trucks and its colonial buildings that are, in many cases, remodeling.
But here is the great contrast since the local film industry is facing a hard crisis. And it is that, if Hollywood can benefit from the diplomatic climate between the two countries, Cuban independent cinema lives another reality because it is very limited, since they depend on the financing of the State, which is often scarce.
But it starts somewhere, and is as well as this new meeting of Hollywood with Cuba could also stimulate and help local independent cinema. However, this phenomenon is very recent, it is not until January of this year, when American producers allow filming on the island, after more than half a century of prohibition. For example, the scenes of James Bond in Cuba were recorded in Puerto Rico and Spain. The same thing happened with the famous film The Godfather: Part II, filmed in the Dominican Republic, as well as Sydney Pollack, Havana, starring Robert Redford film.
Cuba can easily become the new center of the interest of Hollywood. The American film industry is starting to rediscover Cuba, and although it may be too early to talk about Habanawood, we agree with Matthew Carnahan, creator of House of Lies: “the world just make bigger because Cuba has become accessible”.

HOLLYWOOD CONCENTRA SU INTERÉS EN CUBA.
En lo que va del 2016 ha pasado de todo en Cuba. Poco a poco, el mundo ha tomado a La Habana como centro de las artes y del entretenimiento mundial. El concierto de The Rolling Stones, el desfile de moda de la casa francesa Channel en pleno centro de la capital, la filmación de Fast 8 así como la visita del Papa Francisco y otros reconocidas personalidades internacionales – también las Kardashian asomaron las narices por la isla – han sido acontecimientos inéditos e históricos.
Poco a poco vamos viendo cómo Cuba comienza a convertirse en un foco de las artes, y por ahí se escucha hablar de un nuevo fenómeno llamado Habanawood. Así coma la India tiene a Bollywood, estamos ante en el nacimiento de La Habana como un hub de cine en el Caribe. Estamos seguros que a medida que más y más compañías productoras de Hollywood y del mundo se trasladen a la isla mayor será el posicionamiento de Cuba como una meca del séptimo arte. Pero que quede claro que todavía queda mucho camino por recorrer.
Los primeros afortunados fueron los actores del elenco de House of Lies, serie de televisión protagonizada por Don Cheadle y transmitida por Showtime. Ahora le sigue el turno a la súper franquicia de Fast and Furious, filmación que se está realizando en pleno corazón de la capital cubana. En un mensaje publicado en YouTube, Vin Diesel comentó: “Estamos en un lugar que nadie hubiera creído posible. Estamos en La Habana, Cuba. Y se puede ver lo hermoso que es, con toda esta gente maravillosa”. Esto apenas es el comienzo porque se dice que Transformers 5 será parcialmente filmada en el país caribeño.
Es indiscutible el valor histórico de Cuba, por eso vemos cómo los equipos de rodaje que van directamente desde los Estados Unidos están aprovechando ese toque visual que ofrece La Habana, con sus calles abatidas por el paso de los años y la falta de cuidado, los carros de colección y sus construcciones coloniales que urgen, en muchos casos, de remodelaciones.
Pero he ahí el gran contraste ya que la industria cinematográfica local enfrenta una dura crisis. Y es que, si Hollywood puede beneficiarse de la coyuntura diplomática entre los dos países, el cine independiente cubano vive otra realidad porque se encuentra muy limitado, ya que dependen del financiamiento del Estado, el cual, en muchas ocasiones es escaso.
Pero por algún lado se empieza, y es así como esta nueva reunión de Hollywood con Cuba podría también estimular y ayudar al cine independiente local. Sin embargo, este fenómeno es muy reciente, ya que no es sino a partir de enero de este año, cuando se permite a las productoras estadounidense filmar en la isla, después de más de medio siglo de prohibición. Por ejemplo, las escenas de James Bond en Cuba fueron grabadas en Puerto Rico y España. Los mismo sucedió con la famosa película The Godfather: Part II, filmada en República Dominicana, al igual que la película de Sydney Pollack, Havana, protagonizada por Robert Redford.
Cuba puede fácilmente convertirse en el nuevo centro del interés de Hollywood. La industria de cine estadounidense está comenzando a redescubrir Cuba, y aunque puede ser muy temprano para hablar de Habanawood, estamos de acuerdo con Matthew Carnahan, creador de House of Lies: “El mundo se acaba de hacer más grande porque Cuba se ha vuelto accesible”.
