The Cuban authorities want to promote other parts of the island, mainly the central and Oriental part of the island. A new cruise line takes the initiative.

Grand Circle is the name of the new cruise line that will begin to provide services to Cuba next January. The company announced a 11-nights trip to the island, leaving the international port of Miami, in the United States, at a cost of $6.795 per person.

Los pasajeros del Grand Circle, unos 89 en cada embarcación, serán trasladados a Matanzas, Caibarién, Remedios, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad y Cienfuegos, es decir una mezcla de ciudades grandes y pequeñas, acorde con el deseo del gobierno cubano de que el turismo no se concentre en lugares tradicionales como La Habana y Varadero.
Pero, ¿qué tienen para ofrecer a los turistas localidades pequeñas como Remedios y Caibarién? Ambas se sitúan al noreste de Villa Clara, cerca de la cayería norte del centro de la isla, una zona de playas paradisíacas, pero cuentan con un valor agregado, historia y riqueza cultural.
“Dicen que La Habana y Varadero no aguantan más, que están llenos, igual por eso los turistas están viniendo más para acá. Ahora las temporadas bajas son menos bajas”, cuenta a la agencia de noticias EFE René Poyato, camarero en uno de los resort de lujo de la provincia oriental de Holguín. Y es que la región oriental de la isla busca robarle turistas a la parte occidental.
“Cuba no es solo La Habana y Varadero. El país, con las nuevas aperturas, quiere promocionar otras partes de la isla, como el oriente, que combina sol, naturaleza, folclore e historia”, señala Carlos Álvarez, gerente general en la zona del Grupo Gaviota, el principal operador turístico de Cuba, propiedad del Estado.
La compañía Grand Circle señaló que este tipo de viaje a Cuba es posible bajo el programa de intercambio People-to-People (pueblo a pueblo) existente entre Cuba y EEUU desde hace cinco décadas. Según el gobierno cubano, el año pasado visitaron la isla 3.5 millones de turistas y espera que este lo hagan 3.8 millones.
El gobierno cubano considera a los cruceros una fuente fácil de ingresos que puede atraer a miles de viajeros estadounidenses sin saturar los hoteles ni estrechar más el suministro de alimentos, que actualmente opera al límite de su capacidad.
