CUBAN CHARACTERS: SANTIAGO AND “THE RED DEVIL”.”
Some years ago, of course being a kid, I saw moving all over the streets of Santiago de Cuba, my hometown, a character mounted on skids that elegantly and with utmost skill was going everywhere in our city with a skill little seen in skaters, they called him “The Red Devil”, he was a simple man but his style as a skater on the streets was not compared to today with any other known human being by my.

The Red Devil, “a man of black complexion, tall and slim, appearing frequently in the streets of Santiago, Horn in his mouth, and his spiky Anatomy installed on skates, with which was circus filigree”, as Angel Luis Beltrán described it in a report of January 6, 1991.
His real name was Emilio Benavides Puentes and was born on October 6, 1901 in Santiago de Cuba. Had 23 brothers and a sister.
Since a child, in the midst of hardship in which his family lived and which forced him to realize how much work appeared, had two great passions that, over time, would bring him fame: skates and dance, specifically the Charleston. By the year 1927 be made regular visitor of the company theatrical buffa of beads. When they lowered the curtain on the intermediate of the work, Emilio began to dance like crazy in the stands at the theatre. One day the owner saw it and liked it so much the self-confidence of the young man who hired him as eccentric and acrobatic dancer. It was precisely in this role when, during a performance in Holguin, baptized it with the nickname that marked it for the rest of his life: El Diablo Rojo. The Red Devil, even already octogenarian was devoted to caring for the safety of the children at a Santiago school, the “Armando García”, in the popular street trail, regulating the traffic in the area. On February 22, 1995 died the Red Devil. Left 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Next to his coffin, school children “Armando Garcia”, to whom he dedicated his last years, they did honor guard.

PERSONAJES CUBANOS: SANTIAGO Y “EL DIABLO ROJO.
Hace ya algunos años, siendo por supuesto un niño, veía recorrer las calles de Santiago de Cuba, mi pueblo natal a un personaje montado en patines que elegantemente y con suma destreza atravesaba todas las calles de nuestra ciudad con una habilidad poco vistas en los patinadores, le llamaban “El Diablo Rojo”, era un hombre sencillo pero su estilo como patinador por las calles no era comparada hasta hoy con ningun otro ser humano conocido por mi.
El Diablo Rojo, “un hombre de negra tez, alto y delgado, que aparecía frecuentemente en las calles de Santiago, bocina en la boca, y su espigada anatomía instalada sobre patines, con los cuales hacía filigranas circenses”, tal y como lo describiera Angel Luis Beltrán en un reportaje del 6 de enero de 1991.

Su verdadero nombre era Emilio Benavides Puentes y nació el 6 de octubre de 1901 en Santiago de Cuba. Tuvo 23 hermanos y una hermana.
De pequeño, en medio de la penuria en que vivía su familia y que lo obligó a realizar cuanto trabajo apareciera, tuvo dos grandes aficiones que, con el tiempo, le traerían la fama: los patines y el baile, específicamente el Charleston. Por el año 1927 se hizo asiduo visitante de la compañía teatral bufa de Bolito. Cuando bajaban el telón en el intermedio de la obra, Emilio se ponía a bailar como loco en las graderías del teatro. Un día el dueño lo vio y le gustó tanto el desparpajo del joven que lo contrató como bailarín excéntrico y acrobático. Fue precisamente en este rol cuando, durante una actuación en Holguín, lo bautizaron con el mote que lo marcó para el resto de su vida: El Diablo Rojo. Lo de diablo era por sus movimientos, y lo de rojo, por el color de la ropa que vestía.
Como patinador, nació una de sus mayores hazañas: un viaje entre la capital y Santiago ¡sobre patines! El tramo lo recorrió en 7 días y 3 horas. En total, a lo largo de su vida, hizo cinco viajes entre Habana y Santiago: tres para la capital y dos hacia tierras santiagueras. Siempre en funciones propagandísticas. En su larga vida se le contabilizaron más de 3000 saltos sobre automóviles. También saltó sobre 12 bicicletas en conjunto y sobre muchachos que se acostaban sobre pavimento.
Luego del triunfo de la Revolución de 1959, el Diablo Rojo realizó varios trabajos: mensajero; mozo de limpieza; vendedor de refresco, emparedados y otras mercancías en cines de Santiago; hasta que en 1969 se jubiló.
El Diablo Rojo, incluso ya octogenario se dedicó a cuidar la seguridad de los niños de una escuela santiaguera, la “Armando García”, en la popular calle Trocha, regulando el tránsito de la zona. Con las piernas en semi cuclillas y los brazos extendidos, detenía a los automóviles para que las filas de niños cruzaran la calle.
El 22 de febrero de 1995 murió el Diablo Rojo. Dejó 6 hijos, 13 nietos y 2 bisnietos. Junto a su féretro, niños de la escuela “Armando García”, los mismos a los cuales él dedicó sus últimos años, hicieron guardia de honor.
Asi pasó a mejor vida un ser sencillo, audaz, emprendedor y uno de los mas habiles patinadores que ya he conocido en mi larga existencia. Que descanse en Paz.
