Al principio fue un impacto visual, más que sonoro. La desprejuiciada forma de vestir y sobre todo, de llevar sus cabellos, fue lo primero que llamó la atención a los cubanos que admiraban a Bob Marley.
Bob Marley el muy conocido icono musical de la comunidad caribeña. En declaracion de Gerardo Alfonso durante el primer concierto institucional cubano dedicado al legendario músico Jamaicano: “La primera cosa que me influyó de Bob Marley antes que la música fue la imagen, el propio dreadlock”.
Sin olvidar que su esposa fue la Santiaguera Rita Marley quien es también una gran intérprete de la música dejada como recuerdo imperecedero de los músicos de Cuba. Alpharita Constantia” Rita ” Nacida Marley Anderson; de Leroy Anderson y Cynthia “Beda” Jarrett nació en Santiago de Cuba el 25 de julio de 1946, es una cantante cubano-jamaicano y viuda de Bob Marley.
En declaraciones en otra ocasión Alfonso el creador de conocidas interpretaciones del género este explicó que después de esa recepción primigenia, fue ¨ descubriendo los contenidos de Bob Marley y las razones por las que anduvo por los caminos que anduvo ¨; hasta comprender ¨ que el tipo era un gigante y era un ejemplo ¨. Y precisó: Así fue como musicalmente me adentré en el reggae e hice uno de mis primero temas en este género, hace 24 años ya. Se titula Dicen que, y habla de los problemas raciales.¨

Precisamente Felipe, vocalista del grupo Remanente dijo en una ocasión “Como músico he podido comprobar algo: a casi todo el mundo le gusta el reggae, pero nadie lo sabe. Lo hemos visto las veces que tocamos, el público que asiste no tiene afición por esa música, pero la disfruta y se relaja con ella. Entonces, a la gente le gusta el reggae”.
Otros músicos cubanos que no siguen directamente el reggae no escapan a la influencia del género y su cantautor icónico. Sobre el tema Roberto Perdomo, líder del grupo de rock Tesis de Menta dijo en cierta ocasión en Mirador de la Habana, que aunque él no sigue al pie de la letra a Marley, disfruta con su música y atesora sus discos.
“No podemos olvidar que el reggae forma parte del universo sonoro del rock”, puntualizó Perdomo. agregando: “el reggae es una de las musas salas de esa gran mansión que es el rock”.

Por otra parte, cabe advertir que el reggae que se hace en Cuba no es calco fiel al de Bob Marley, aquí recibe el aporte mágico de la rumba, la trova y el son, ingredientes que marcan la diferencia.
Al margen de lo antedicho, todavía hay que ensanchar los espacios para la música caribeña en Cuba. Es necesario propiciar un acercamiento sistemático mas cerrado a esta maravillosa cultura y no sólo a su música.
