CUBA AND THE BEAUTIFUL GUATEMALA NATIONAL ANTHEM.
José Joaquín Palma Lasso (Bayamo, 11 of September of 1844-city of Guatemala, 2 of August of 1911) was a poet, Professor, diplomatic and Cuban journalist, that wrote the lyrics of the anthem national of Guatemala.
Since 1870, Palm turned official missions outside of Cuba, and as a diplomat was that the Government of Guatemala to recognize the belligerency of the Cuban people and of Honduras gave protection and work to dozens of fighters, at the conclusion of the call large – 1868-1878 war. Palma was appointed Minister and Consul of Cuba in Guatemala, where he served until his death. Was also diplomatic of the Government Cuban in Nicaragua.
The Anthem of Guatemala.
A strong storm, with Thunder included, made rumble the night in that the poet and Patriot Cuban José Joaquín Palma wrote the poem Guatemala happy, that with the time is developed in the anthem national of that country Central American.
To Ana of Mendez, granddaughter of Palma, is it told his mother, America Ana, an of them daughters of the poet from Bayamo, exiled in Guatemala from 1872 until his death the 2 of August of 1911.
According to Ana America, his father told him that he wanted to write that poem when he was thundering, during a storm with many lights in the sky. Just a night, in time of winter in Guatemala, began to Thunder and had a storm very strong, Palm is rose inspired and emerged “Guatemala feliz”.
In 1896 he summoned a contest for the creation of the national anthem of Guatemala. Palm decided to send his poem as anonymous, as the call was only for Guatemalans. But curious and amazingly, the Government invited him to be part of the jury, so it was impossible to refuse to the qualifier of the Competition Tribunal.
When it was time to vote, he apologised and abstained; a friend observed this and questioned Palma why did such a thing; then the young poet Cuban said of mode very confidential that the letter anonymous of the anthem selected was yours and you did swear that never say the truth.
Such an occurrence, – explained Ana – America, it remained secret until already on the deathbed of José Joaquin, the friend told that Palm was the author of the anthem of Guatemala.
To know this fact, they prepared him a tribute on July 23, 1911; so there was a parade of schools, also next to a Government delegation took him a laurel wreath to your home. He died 10 days later.

José Joaquín Palma Lasso (Bayamo, 11 de septiembre de 1844-Ciudad de Guatemala, 2 de agosto de 1911) fue un poeta, profesor, diplomático y periodista cubano, que escribió la letra del Himno Nacional de Guatemala.
Desde 1870, Palma cumplió misiones oficiales fuera de Cuba, y como diplomático logró que el gobierno de Guatemala reconociera la beligerancia de los cubanos y el de Honduras diera protección y trabajo a decenas de combatientes, al concluir la llamada Guerra Grande-de 1868 a 1878. Palma fue nombrado Ministro y Cónsul de Cuba en Guatemala, cargo que ocupó hasta su muerte.Fue tambien diplomático del gobierno cubano en Nicaragua.
El Himno de Guatemala.
Una fuerte tormenta, con truenos incluidos, hizo retumbar la noche en que el poeta y patriota cubano José Joaquín Palma escribió el poema Guatemala feliz, que con el tiempo se convirtió en el himno nacional de ese país centroamericano.
A Ana de Méndez, nieta de Palma, se lo contó su madre, América Ana, una de las hijas del poeta bayamés, exiliado en Guatemala desde 1872 hasta su muerte el 2 de agosto de 1911.
Según América Ana, su padre le decía que él quería escribir ese poema cuando estuviera tronando, durante una tormenta con muchas luces en el cielo. Justamente una noche, en tiempo de invierno en Guatemala, comenzó a tronar y había una tormenta muy fuerte, Palma se levantó inspirado y surgió “Guatemala feliz”.
En 1896 se convocó a un concurso para la creación del himno nacional de Guatemala. Palma decidió enviar su poema como anónimo, pues la convocatoria era solo para guatemaltecos. Pero curioso y sorprendentemente, el gobierno le invitó a formar parte del jurado, por lo que fue imposible negarse a integrar el tribunal calificador del certamen.
Cuando fue el momento de votar, se excusó y abstuvo; un amigo observó esto y le cuestionó a Palma el porqué había hecho tal cosa; entonces el joven poeta cubano dijo de modo muy confidencial que la letra anónima del himno seleccionado era suya y le hizo jurar que nunca diría la verdad.
Tal suceso, -expuso Ana América-, quedó en secreto hasta que ya en el lecho de muerte de José Joaquín, el amigo contó que Palma era el autor el himno de Guatemala.
Al conocerse este hecho, le prepararon un homenaje el 23 de julio de 1911; así hubo un desfile de escuelas, también junto a una delegación del Gobierno le llevaron una corona de laurel hasta su casa. Murió 10 días después.
