PERSONAJES CUBANOS: YAYO “EL TORERO NEGRO”.
..Los cubanos también tuvimos nuestro torero: “Yayo, el torero negro”. Les cuento. Yayo tenía unos diez años cuando, sólo, como un perro sin raza, se apareció por el reparto habanero de Juanelo. A la deriva desde esa edad, sin saber de aulas, libros, ni familias… creció como planta silvestre en los patios de los vecinos, comiendo unas veces aquí, otras allá….
Pero, milagros de la naturaleza, Yayo tenía una constitución física poco común y dotada de condiciones que hoy se hubiera convertido en un atleta olímpico.
Desde temprano mostró aptitudes para el deporte, nadando en un recodo del río que separa al reparto Juanelo del vecino Lawton. Defendía a los muchachos del barrio de pandillas vecinas que venían a atacarlos.
La existencia de una rústica plaza de toros en la finca Los Zapotes (hoy reparto California), en el reparto Juanelo, ejerció poderosa influencia “taurina” en Yayo, que encontró en aquellas corridas dominicales eventual fuente de trabajo. Cuando Yayo toreaba le lanzaban monedas al ruedo que, para hacerlas suyas tenía que recogerlas entre las patas del toro, y con el peligro de ser embestido.
Yayo tenía el corazón en medio del pecho y toreaba aguijoneado más por la necesidad que la sangre torera que pudiera correr por sus afrocubanas venas. Pero Yayo se hizo famoso, admirado y querido por los vecinos que lo vieron criarse en el barrio.
Yayo alternaba las corridas de toros boxeando en la Arena Cristal. Cuando los años, los golpes, y las penurias comenzaron a minar su cuerpo, lo encontramos en la “guanajera” de cine Gardel cuidando el orden.
Un día supe que Yayo había muerto, los médicos certificaron tétanos, quizás una vieja cornada, presentando un avanzado estado de anemia.
Les aseguro que Yayo, el torero negro, no murió por las cornadas de los toros, ni por los golpes recibidos en el ring de boxeo, murió por los golpes que le dio la vida y por las coronadas que recibió del hambre, que fueron muchas, mucha..
