Según los herederos de Lansky, su nieto Gary Rapoport, es su legado legítimo. Y están ansiosos por litigar para recibirlo. El problema es que nuestro gobierno no nos apoya en el reclamo —dijo Gary Rapoport, el nieto mayor de Lansky, a Infobae. Dicen que los reclamos se tendrían que haber hecho en su momento. Los cerraron en los ’60 y los volvieron a abrir en los ’80 para permitir que algunas de las grandes corporaciones se sumaran. Pero ahora están cerrados y no nos permiten hacerlo. Lo dijeron en la Comisión de Acuerdos sobre Reclamos en el Extranjero (U.S. Foreign Claims Settlement Commission).
Pero según lo que hallaron los abogados, Fidel Castro reclama tanto en impuestos que no quedaría nada. Así que nos dijeron que tenemos que esperar a que Castro muera: entonces será el momento de comenzar a hablar sobre los reclamos de las propiedades. El sheriff quedaba contento, porque se quedaba con un pedacito del negocio; los dueños quedaban contentos, porque no tenían que ir a Las Vegas para ocuparse; el establishment quedaba contento porque se generaban negocios… ¡Yo lo compararía con Donald Trump, y es un candidato a la presidencia! Era una buena persona.
El hombre que inspiró el personaje de Hyman Roth, que Lee Strasberg interpretó en la película El Padrino II, de Francis Coppola, conoció en una escuela del Lower East Side de Manhattan a Luciano, quien se convirtió en su amigo como Siegel. En los años de la prohibición dominaron con fuerza una parte del mercado del alcohol clandestino; Lansky se asoció en el negocio con Joe Kennedy, el padre del futuro presidente John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
El era un individuo singular al que la gente respetaba. En mi adolescencia trabajé en uno de sus hoteles: estacionaba los automóviles en el Singapore, que tenía un restaurante muy grande. En la cocina del Singapore trabajaban muchos cubanos. Cuando mi abuelo salía en la prensa yo los escuchaba comentar: ‘¿Por qué no dejan a este pobre hombre en paz? Es el mejor del mundo, ya lo era antes con nosotros en Cuba’. Ellos no sabían quién era yo, y hablaban así de él. En Cuba tuvo la reputación de un tipo para el que valía la pena trabajar: pagaba más que lo que pagaban otros empleadores, sus establecimientos eran de calidad y siempre se portó como un caballero, según nos dijo Gary, su nieto.
Durante el primer golpe de Estado de Batista, en 1933, Lansky comenzó su relación personal y comercial con Cuba. A cambio de que lo dejaran operar en paz, Batista y sus hombres recibirían una mordida de las ganancias de los casinos y los clubes nocturnos. La sociedad prosperó y se mantuvo gracias al soborno de otras autoridades hasta que Batista dio el golpe de 1952, cuando quiso que Lansky participara activamente en la gestión. Pero a Lansky le interesaban más los diez años sin impuestos que podía disfrutar quien invirtiera un millón de dólares en un hotel, porque su sueño era tener el casino más grande fuera de Las Vegas.
Hasta que lo concretó, armó la red básica del estado gansteril cubano: el Montmartre Club, el casino en el tradicional Hotel Nacional —que su hermano, Jacob Lansky, llegó a administrar antes de la revolución del 1º de enero de 1959—, el cabaret Sans Souci, los hoteles Deauville, Capri y Commodoro. En 1946, Lansky participó de la Conferencia de La Habana, una reunión de alto nivel de la mafia para ordenar los negocios en la ciudad. Al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Luciano huyó de Italia con pasaporte falso y llegó a Cuba. Se convirtió en el mejor administrador posible para Lansky: un amigo.

Según Gary, “Cuando mi abuelo comenzó sus operaciones en Cuba, Richard Nixon quiso ser su socio. Pero él no lo necesitaba; sólo fue socio del padre de Kennedy en los primeros años. ¿Por qué se hubiera metido con Nixon, que era un jugador malísimo? Perdía más de lo que ganaba, le debía dinero a mucha gente. De ningún modo mi abuelo iba a asumir ese riesgo”.
“Difícil saber si logrará incluir el final de la disputa por el Hotel Riviera, que en su momento llevó el aire acondicionado a la isla al garantizarlo en sus 16 pisos —Lansky subió uno a uno en persona para asegurarse de la circulación del frío—. Al menos estarán la construcción moderna de sus 440 habitaciones, todas con vista al mar y su inauguración con un show de la bailarina Ginger Rogers en el Copa Room: ya son parte de la leyenda del lugar. Y también que un investigador de las marinas del mundo descubrió que Lanksy fue co-propietario con Frank Sinatra de la Marina Hemingway”. El gobierno de Batista garantizó cada dólar de la inversión y aseguró que los bancos locales subsidiaran la mitad del proyecto, que llegó a 14 millones de dólares de aquel momento…

Lo que quiero no es ocuparme del Hotel Riviera sino encontrar una compañía hotelera que esté interesada en hacerlo y entregarle los derechos. Mi objetivo no es ir a Cuba y hacerme cargo del hotel y reconstruirlo. Mi abuelo nunca pensó que Castro sería posible, nunca pensó que la isla cambiaría: fue una decepción para él y yo siento lo mismo. En Tampa hay tantas personas que vinieron de Cuba que sé que la gente en la isla es sensacional.
