To enter a school of Visual Arts could be the dream of many young people, but if it’s a centre with 198 years as the National Academy of fine arts San Alejandro.
It was founded January 12, 1818, with the support of the Cuban society of friends of the country, and had the privilege of having as first director to the French painter John Baptist Vermay.
Many have been graduates of that prestigious Centre, Victor Manuel, Fidelio Ponce of León, Jorge Arche, Eduardo Abela, Servando Cabrera, Pablo Borges Delgado, Amelia Peláez, Antonio Gattorno, Manuel Rodulfo Tardo and other great creators.
This institution has maintained its reputation for nearly two centuries, and the Faculty and students who have integrated it always have been part of the intellectual vanguard of the country.
History.
Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes “San Alejandro” is the oldest and most prestigious fine arts school in Cuba. It is located in Marianao, a suburb of Havana. It was founded in 1818 at the Convent of San Alejandro by the French painter, Jean Baptiste Vermay, who was its first director. It is located today in a monumental building built in the early 1940s.
It is the educational center with the largest number of years building the teaching on the lands of Latin America, preceded only by the University of Havana. It turned-from a number of changes that occurred in Spain in the 19th century and not surprisingly was felt in the colonies, in the climate of the Constitution of Cadiz of 1812 and enlightened absolutism. It was established by the Royal Patriotic Society and the Royal Consulate of Havana, as the Free School of Drawing and Painting. Its first director, Juan Bautista Vermay, who arrived in Cuba when the Bonaparte empire collapsed, when he was 31 years old.
The internal life at San Alejandro is governed by the Board of Directors who in turn appoints the Technical Council, who in turn run the different departments that make up the teaching faculty.
The Board of Directors consists of the Director and Deputy Director and the Secretaries Speciality Teaching, Education, Health Care-Economic, Business and Education.
The Technical Board, in turn, is the body responsible for representing the teaching faculty to the Board of Directors. It consists of all deans of each departments. These are the Deans of Drawing, Painting, Engraving, Sculpture, Ceramics, Jewelry, Graphic Arts and Theoretical-Cultural Teachings.
San Alejandro has exchanges with many schools abroad, including in the UK The Cardinal Wiseman Roman Catholic School. Over the past three years, three exchanges have taken place. The exchanges consisted of the students from Wiseman travelling to Cuba in February, and the Cuban students coming to London in June.

Para entrar en una escuela de artes visuales podría ser el sueño de muchos jóvenes, pero si se trata de un centro con 198 años como la Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro.
Fue fundada 12 de enero de 1818, con el apoyo de la Sociedad Cubana de Amigos del País, y tuvo el privilegio de tener como primer director al pintor francés Juan Bautista Vermay.
Muchos de ellos graduados de ese prestigioso centro han sido, Víctor Manuel, Fidelio Ponce de León, Jorge Arche, Eduardo Abela, Servando Cabrera, y otros que no siguió el mundo de la creación artística como José Martí, Camilo Cienfuegos, Silvio Rodríguez y Abel Prieto .
Esta institución ha mantenido su reputación de casi dos siglos, y la Facultad y los estudiantes que han integrado siempre han sido parte de la vanguardia intelectual del país.
Historial.
Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes “San Alejandro” es la escuela de bellas artes más antiguas y de mayor prestigio en Cuba. Se encuentra en Marianao, un barrio de La Habana. Fue establecido por la Real Sociedad Patriótica y el Real Consulado de La Habana, como la Escuela Libre de Dibujo y Pintura. La vida interna en San Alejandro se rige por el Consejo de Administración, que a su vez nombra al Consejo Técnico, que a su vez ejecutar los diferentes departamentos que componen el cuerpo docente.
El Consejo de Administración está formado por el Director y el Director Adjunto y la Enseñanza Secretarios especializadas, Educación, Servicios Médicos-Económico, Negocios y Educación.
El Consejo Técnico, a su vez, es el órgano responsable de la representación del profesorado en el Consejo de Administración. Se compone de todos los decanos de cada uno de los departamentos. Estos son los decanos de dibujo, pintura, grabado, escultura, cerámica, joyería, artes gráficas y Enseñanzas Teórico-Cultural.
San Alejandro tiene intercambios con muchas escuelas en el extranjero, incluyendo en el Reino Unido El cardenal Wiseman escuela católica. Durante los últimos tres años, tres intercambios han tenido lugar. Los intercambios consistieron en los estudiantes de Wiseman que viajan a Cuba en febrero, y los estudiantes cubanos que vienen a Londres en junio.
