Cuba will allow the presence of United States Air guards on the regular commercial flights between the two countries, officials from the island.
In her Twitter account, Josefina Vidal, Director of the United States Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote that “September 26 amendment entered into force [a] agreement between Cuba and the United States on deployment of security officers on airlines to do so extended to regular flights”.
In a statement sent to the new Herald the Friday, the administration of safety in the transportation (TSA), confirmed the agreement.
“With respect to the coverage of the service of Federal air police (FAMS) on flights to and from Cuba, the TSA has an agreement for Charter flights and regular commercial flights. “In general terms, to protect the operations and the effectiveness of our program of Federal air police, TSA does not provide specific information about when or what flights are covered by our agents air, since this could potentially compromise the security”, reported the Agency.
The announcement removes one of the biggest points of friction between Congress and the Administration in a controversy over air safety on the island.
In mid-September the TSA admitted that there was still no presence of Federal guards in the regular flights to Cuba. Sen. Marco Rubio and other members of Congress accused the Government of lying to the public as above TSA officials had indicated that the agreement would be concluded before the start of regular flights by the end of August.

CUBA AUTORIZA A GUARDIAS FEDERALES DE EEUU EN VUELOS REGULARES A LA ISLA.
Cuba permitirá la presencia de guardias aéreos de Estados Unidos en los vuelos comerciales regulares entre los dos países, informaron las autoridades de la isla.
En su cuenta de Twitter, Josefina Vidal, directora del Departamento de Estados Unidos del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, escribió que “el 26 de septiembre entró en vigor [una] enmienda al arreglo entre Cuba y EEUU sobre despliegue de Oficiales de Seguridad en aerolíneas para hacerlo extensivo a vuelos regulares”.
En un comunicado enviado al Nuevo Herald el viernes, la Administración de Seguridad en el Transporte (TSA), confirmó el acuerdo.
“Con respecto a la cobertura del Servicio de Policía Aérea Federal (FAMS) en los vuelos desde y hacia Cuba, la TSA tiene un acuerdo para los vuelos fletados y los vuelos comerciales regulares. En términos generales, para proteger las operaciones y la eficacia de nuestro programa de Policía Aérea Federal, la TSA no proporciona información específica sobre cuándo o qué vuelos están cubiertos por nuestros agentes aéreos, ya que ello podría comprometer potencialmente la seguridad”, informó la agencia.
El anuncio elimina uno de los mayores puntos de fricción entre el Congreso y la Administración en una controversia sobre seguridad aérea en la isla.
A mediados de septiembre la TSA admitió que todavía no había presencia de guardias federales en los vuelos regulares a Cuba. El senador Marco Rubio y otros congresistas acusaron al gobierno de haber mentido al público pues anteriormente funcionarios de la TSA habían indicado que el acuerdo estaría concluido antes del comienzo de los vuelos regulares a fines de agosto.
En medio de la polémica, una propuesta de ley—presentada por el presidente del subcomité de Seguridad del Transporte de la Cámara, John Katko—para suspender los vuelos regulares hasta que la TSA certifique que los aeropuertos cubanos cumplen con las medidas apropiadas de seguridad, fue aprobada por el Comité de Seguridad Interna este mes.
