LET’S TALK ABOUT THE MORE ANCIENT BRIDGE OF CUBA.

HABLEMOS SOBRE EL PUENTE MÁS ANTIGUO DE CUBA.
El puente más antiguo de Cuba está sobre el río Yayabo, el mayor afluente de río Zaza. Ambas arterias parecen abrazar a la monumental y legendaria provincia de Sancti Spiritus, única ciudad cubana que se escribe y pronuncia en latín. Este Puente fue proyectado a finales del siglo XVIII, pero su inauguración tuvo lugar en 1825, y aun se encuentra en servicio activo.
El Yayabo, como todo personaje histórico y popular que se respete, tiene también su leyenda. Las tradiciones antiguas refieren que para asegurar la solidez de su construcción, se mezcló cemento traído de Italia con leche de vaca espirituana. De la efectividad de este método no hay nada escrito, pero lo cierto es que la venerable estructura ha resistido carretas y carretones, camiones y rastras, de ahí que muchos espirituanos conocedores de esta historia proclamen con orgullo que el Yayabo es el único puente del mundo construido con leche de vaca, y es posible que hasta tengan razón.
Y ya que estamos paseando por la historia del Puente Yayabo, les recuerdo que de este nombre surge la palabra “Yayabera” y posteriormente guayabera, pues fue en la ribera de río, que a un carpintero español la esposa le confeccionó una prenda de vestir que fuera fresca y en la que pudiera llevar algunas de sus herramientas. Así nació esa camisa larga y ancha, con grandes bolsillos y con el tiempo llegaron las alforzas y otros adornos. Las espirituanos aman a su elegante guayabera, nuestra prenda nacional, por eso han inaugurado el Museo de la Guayabera, al que muchas personalidades cubanas y extranjeras han donado la suya y al puente, al puente, siempre lo tienen presente, fundamentalmente, en las fiestas carnavalescas cuando cantan eso que dice:
Tu que decías que Yayabo no salía más,
Yayabo está en la calle con su último detalle,
Y su ritmo sin igual, ja, ja, ja Yayabo ya salió……
Ja Ja Ja Yayabo ya salió.
