MATANZAS, CUBA, UNA REGIÓN CON MUCHOS NOMBRES.
La hermosa bahía matancera, a unos cien kilómetros de La Habana, era llamada Guanímar por los aborígenes, pero ocurrió que en 1510 Yuguacayex, cacique de la aldea Yucayo, atacó a un grupo de españoles que desembarcaron por la costa, dándole muerte a cerca de treinta de ellos.
De ahí en adelante nadie más nombró Guanímar a ese punto de nuestro mapa, sino Matanzas, y por Real Orden se le nombró San Carlos y San Severino de Matanzas.
Pero aquí no termina la historia. Por sus ríos fue llamada también la ciudad de los ríos, lógicamente a los ríos se le construyeron puentes, por lo que fue denominada la urbe de los puentes; otros recordando la legendaria aldea Yucayo, la llamaron la Gentil Yucayo.
Por sus bellezas naturales y la cultura de sus hijos fue nombrada indistintamente Nápoles de América, Tiro de los mares de Occidente, Venecia cubana, la Ciudad de los poetas y finalmente quedó con fuerza de permanencia la Atenas de Cuba, aunque algunos matanceros recalcitrantes prefieren decir que Atenas es la Matanzas de Grecia.
