La candidata demócrata a la Casa Blanca, Hillary Clinton, afirmó este viernes que su oponente republicano, Donald Trump, pudo violar las leyes estadounidenses al explorar negocios en Cuba en 1998.

“Hoy hemos sabido de sus esfuerzos para hacer negocios en Cuba que parecen violar las leyes de EE.UU. y que sin duda burlan la política exterior estadounidense”, declaró Clinton en su avión a periodistas.

La ex primera dama criticó, además, que Trump “ha engañado repetidamente a la gente al responder preguntas sobre si estaba intentando hacer negocios en Cuba”.

La revista Newsweek reveló que en 1998 Trump exploró negocios en Cuba a través de la consultora Seven Arrows Investment and Development para saltarse el embargo que prohibía inversiones en la isla.

Según Newsweek, Trump Hotels se gastó al menos 60.000 euros para explorar oportunidades de negocio con el Gobierno de Fidel Castro utilizando una consultora y ocultando los motivos bajo justificaciones humanitarias.

Da la casualidad que en 1999 Trump, que por aquel entonces comenzaba sus primeros pasos en política, dio un discurso ante la comunidad cubana de Miami (Florida) en la que criticó a Castro y dijo que no invertiría un dólar en la isla sin un cambio de régimen.

Fuentes del Departamento del Tesoro aseguraron a Newsweek que, pese a que no pueden probar categóricamente que la empresa de Trump no recibió autorización para invertir en Cuba, las posibilidades de que un casino estadounidense intentara gastar dinero en la isla eran “básicamente cero”.

Hace apenas diez días, Trump prometió durante un acto en Miami que, de ser elegido presidente, revertirá la apertura de Estados Unidos hacia Cuba promovida por Obama a menos que se produzcan “libertades religiosas y políticas” en la isla.
