It has been a good number of years, recalling episodes of the historical struggle of Cuba against the Spanish regime in the island, that the general Enrique Loynaz del Castillo told the story and adventure of the wedding of his friend José Maceo, called for everybody ‘the Oriente Lion’ for his brave conduct during the war.
As many known, many cuban combatants from the great war, in the period of the truce that precedes 1895, immigrated to San Jose, Costa Rica. The city of San Jose maintained religious traditions, to prevent the parishioners to receive the sacrament of marriage without dispensing the soul with the baptism and confession.
But Jose Maceo did not want to resign themselves to the habit. Without measure them consequences, the general was in love and due think many times in the ceremony that imposed them traditions Catholic: confess their antics and carry to the bride to the altar of the parish.
Most of the priests of Costa Rica were Spanish novices and consistently boss wondered: do confess I myself José Maceo, to a Galician priest? Tell my secrets to a Spanish enemy?
Just found a solution to your dilemma: the abduction of the bride, and a good day the high military go into the fields, without Church blessing, with the bride to her foal rump.
The scandal ran across the city. An exile had kidnapped the beautiful bride without respecting social conventions. The general Antonio Maceo, it was overwhelmed by the many gossips about it. Then, called Loynaz del Castillo: “you are his “loquero” – told – convinces Joseph to get married”.
General Loynaz was looking for passionate fellow, he found next to the bride, eating under the eaves of a country Ranch.
The diplomatic emissary used all their trickery to convince the caudillo. However, Jose seemed inaccessible.
“I would marry-you said Jose-if not had that confess me, because I not you say my things to any cure gallego”.
Finally relented to the promise that will seek a kind and discreet, priest who made few questions. The three returned to the city; Enrique Loynaz, José Maceo and the bride. The cleric was waiting at the parish. All were satisfied the moment of penance kneeling before pastor, Joseph spoke in a low voice. Of soon, with surprise for all, hear the voice of Joseph that rumbles like Thunder:
-“Me, father, asks you to if I have killed me?” To me, for ten years, I struggled for the independence of Cuba. Of course Yes! Indeed that on one occasion I had to kill a fat and Galician band-aid as you”.
The new intervention of the Patriots Enrique Loynaz del Castillo and Antonio Maceo managed to convince the terrified priest who will continue his mission. Antonio was full of joy. The wedding of Joseph was in his own home. General Loynaz signed the marriage act as Godfather and all the Cuban exiles were the witnesses of the marriage of the León de Oriente.
An episode that happened to the pages of the history of Cuba and its best Patriots.

LA INOLVIDABLE BODA DE “EL LEÓN DE ORIENTE” DE CUBA.
Ya hace un buen número de años, recordando episodios de la histórica contienda de Cuba contra el régimen español que imperaba entonces en la isla, entre ellas, contaba el general Enrique Loynaz del Castillo las peripecias de la boda de su gran amigo José Maceo, el León de Oriente.
Como se conoce, muchos personajes de la Guerra Grande, en el período de la tregua que antecede a 1895, emigraron a San José de Costa Rica. La ciudad de San José conservaba tradiciones religiosas, hasta impedir que los feligreses recibieran el sacramento del matrimonio sin dispensar el alma con el bautismo y la confesión.
Pero José Maceo no quiso resignarse a la costumbre. Sin medir las consecuencias, el general estaba enamorado y debió pensar muchas veces en la ceremonia que imponían las tradiciones católicas: confesar sus travesuras y llevar a la novia al altar de la parroquia.
La mayoría de los sacerdotes de Costa Rica eran novicios españoles y constantemente el jefe se preguntaba: ¿Confesarme yo, yo mismo José Maceo, ante un cura gallego? ¿Decirle mis secretos a un español enemigo?
Solo encontró una salida a su dilema: el rapto de la novia, y un buen día el alto militar se interna en los campos, sin la bendición eclesiástica, con la novia a grupa de su potro.
El escándalo corrió por toda la urbe. Un exiliado había raptado a la linda novia sin respetar las convenciones sociales. El general Antonio Maceo, se vio abrumado por las comidillas. Entonces, llamó a Loynaz del Castillo: “Tú eres su loquero – le dijo- convence a José que se case”.

El general Loynaz fue a buscar al apasionado compañero, al que halló junto a la novia, comiendo bajo el alero de un rancho campestre.
El diplomático emisario usó toda su argucia para convencer al caudillo. Sin embargo, José parecía inaccesible.
“Me casaría -le manifestó José- si no tuviera que confesarme, porque yo no le digo mis cosas a ningún cura gallego”.
Por fin cedió a la promesa de que le buscaran un sacerdote bondadoso y discreto, que hiciera pocas preguntas. Los tres regresaron a la ciudad; Enrique Loynaz, José Maceo y la novia. El clérigo esperaba en la parroquia. Todos observaban satisfechos el instante de la penitencia arrodillado ante el párroco, José hablaba en voz baja. De pronto, con sorpresa para todos, se oye la voz de José que retumba como un trueno:
-“¿A mí, padre, me pregunta usted que si he matado? A mí, que luché diez años por la independencia de Cuba. ¡Claro que sí! Por cierto que en una ocasión me tocó matar a un curita gordo y gallego como usted”.
La nueva intervención de los patriotas Enrique Loynaz del Castillo y Antonio Maceo lograron convencer al aterrorizado sacerdote que continuara su misión. Antonio rebosaba de alegría. La boda de José se efectuó en su propia casa. El general Loynaz firmó el acta matrimonial como padrino y todos los cubanos exiliados fueron los testigos del casamiento del León de Oriente.
Un episodio que pasó a las paginas de la historia de Cuba y la de sus mejores patriotas.
