UNKNOWN CUBA: YATERAS STONE MUSEUM.
Between coffee plantations is the work of Angel Iñigo, creator of the stone Zoo, until, where we know the only of its kind in the world, site nestled in the mountains of the municipality of Yateras in the easternmost of the Cuban provas: Guantánamo, the land of the Son.
In this spot will exhibit more than 400 sculptures, the first of them created in December of 1977. In place come together the creations of the empirical sculptor, along with abundant vegetation, combination that enriches their values, since it is a kind of natural paradise for sculptures.
When are you asked to Angel on this incredible adventure, responded: “when started to carve my first piece, it people, faithless, doubted of my work.” “Said that to make sculptures was necessary pass a school, that this was a madness, that it best was that continue with the cultivation of the Earth”
“Gradually, says Mr Osmar Álvarez, limestones located in the finca San Lorenzo, at 24 kilometers from the city of Guantanamo, with an extension of two chivalry in abrupt, with part ground flat and high forming a lomerio, were transformed in this unique Zoo animals: Lions, elephants, gorillas, rhinos, chimpanzees, etc. etc., all at her natural size.” The fauna of the jungle African transferred in stone, to a corner of region East of Cuba, by a peasant guantanamero, to astonishment of Cuban and foreigners that visit this unusual Zoo.
The Museum was declared heritage of the nation Cuban, the 26 of July of 1985, “by its results and contributions to the culture.” A visit to this Zoo of stone is a trip to the real and wonderful that Alejo Carpentier spoke to us.

LA CUBA DESCONOCIDA: EL MUSEO DE PIEDRA DE YATERAS.
Entre cafetales surge la obra de Ángel Iñigo, creador del Zoológico de Piedra, hasta, donde sabemos único de su tipo en el mundo, sitio ubicado en las montañas del municipio de Yateras, en la más oriental de las provas cubanas: Guantánamo, la tierra del Son.
En este paraje se exhiben más de 400 esculturas, la primera de ellas creada en diciembre de 1977. En el lugar confluyen las creaciones del escultor empírico, junto a la abundante vegetación, combinación que enriquece sus valores, pues constituye una suerte de paraíso natural para las esculturas.
Cuando se le preguntaba a Ángel sobre esta increíble aventura, respondía: “Cuando empecé a tallar mi primera pieza, la gente, incrédula, dudaba de mi trabajo. Decían que para hacer esculturas era necesario pasar una escuela, que esto era una locura, que lo mejor era que siguiera con el cultivo de la tierra”
“Poco a poco, nos cuenta el colega Osmar Álvarez, las piedras calizas ubicadas en la finca San Lorenzo, a 24 kilómetros de la ciudad de Guantánamo, con una extensión de dos caballerías en terreno abrupto, con parte llanas y altas que forman un lomerío, fueron transformándose en los animales de este zoológico singular: leones, elefantes, gorilas, rinocerontes, chimpancés, etc. etc., todos a su tamaño natural. La fauna de la selva africana trasladada en piedra, a un rincón de región oriental de Cuba, por un campesino guantanamero, para asombro de cubanos y extranjeros que visitan este insólito zoológico.
El Museo fue declarado Patrimonio de la Nación Cubana, el 26 de julio de 1985, “por sus resultados y aportes a la cultura.” Una visita a este Zoo de piedra es un viaje a lo real y maravilloso del que nos hablara Alejo Carpentier.
