“The whole country is a scratched disc” says Canek Sánchez Guevara, grandson of Ernesto Che Guevara, on one of the pages of his book 33 revolutions a newly edited and posthumously published in France this year under the Alfaguara imprint. NIETO DEL “CHÉ GUEVARA ABRE LAS PÁGINAS DE LA REALIDAD CUBANA.

“El país entero es un disco rayado” asegura Canek Sánchez Guevara, nieto de Ernesto Che Guevara, en una de las páginas de su libro 33 revoluciones publicado póstumamente en Francia este año y recién editado bajo el sello Alfaguara. El volumen se acerca con una dura mirada a la Revolución cubana y a la cotidianidad de la Isla, en la que el escritor se sumergió tras pasar su infancia entre Italia, España y México.

Con apenas 12 años, el nieto de Ernesto Guevara e hijo de su primogénita Hilda, arribó a su país natal y se dio de bruces con una realidad muy diferente a la que había imaginado en el seno de una familia marcadamente de izquierdas. “Cada día es una repetición del anterior, cada semana, mes, año; y de repetición en repetición el sonido se degrada hasta que sólo queda una vaga e irreconocible remembranza del audio original”, escribió.

Canek no imaginaba, al aterrizar en la Isla, que estaba llegando a una realidad a punto de cambiar abruptamente. En la lejana Unión Soviética, Mijaíl Gorbachov consolidaba la Perestroika, mientras Fidel Castro apostaba por el enroque de una “rectificación de errores y tendencias negativas” en la que satanizaban los mercados agrícolas y llamaba a no “construir el socialismo con medidas capitalistas”.

El nieto del guerrillero se encontró un país en el que “nada funciona pero todo da igual”, como describió en las páginas de 33 revoluciones . De ese encontronazo entre la propaganda y la vida en las calles, se nutre el texto que trabajó durante más de una década y que solo vio la luz tras su prematuro final, a los 40 años de edad debido a complicaciones derivadas de una cirugía cardiovascular.

Amigo de diseñadores, admirador de algunos cantautores que ni siquiera se presentaban en locales estatales y metido en la noche habanera hasta los tuétanos, Canek era un raro espécimen de “hijo de papá”. Si en los clanes de comandantes, generales y altos funcionarios, todos se enfrentaban por alcanzar las mayores prebendas, el vástago de la hija del Che prefería las sombras, hacía todo lo posible por pasar inadvertido.

Había nacido en La Habana en 1974 y era fruto de la unión de Hilda Guevara Gadea y del mexicano Alberto Sánchez Hernández, un joven de Monterrey que militaba en la Liga de los Comunistas Armados y que llegó a la Isla tras secuestrar un avión. Muchos amigos bromearían más tarde con Canek sobre el hecho de que sus genes llevaban inscrita la rebeldía… pero Cuba ya no era tierra para rebeldes.

En lugar de sumarse al coro oficial, el nieto del Che le hizo honor a su nombre que en la lengua de los mayas quiere decir “Serpiente negra” y se deslizó silencioso y sin ínfulas por una Cuba donde todas las puertas se le hubieran abierto con solo mencionar a su abuelo. Al poder, claro está, no le gustó esa fascinación por “los bajos mundos” que profesaba el joven, por la gente de a pie, sin grados militares ni hazañas en la biografía.

Las historias contadas en 33 revoluciones destilan mucho de eso que el autor confesaría en un texto autobiográfico anterior fechado en 2006: “Me hice en Cuba: la amé y la odié como sólo se puede amar y odiar algo valioso, algo que es parte fundamental de uno”. Viviría en la isla los años más difíciles del Período Especial, presenció la Crisis de los Balseros y en 1996 decidió instalarse en Oaxaca, México, donde desarrolló la mayor parte de su trabajo como escritor, diseñador y promotor cultural.

Años después explicó que su salida de Cuba obedeció en gran medida a “la criminalización de la diferencia”, que tenía lugar en su país natal, especialmente la “persecución de homosexuales, hippies, librepensadores, sindicalistas y poetas”, y la entronización de una “burguesía socialista (…) fingidamente proletaria”, a la que no quería pertenecer ni contribuir.

Este octubre, la noticia de la aparición de su libro en una editorial española promete empañar los hipócritas homenajes oficiales que han rendido culto a su abuelo dentro de Cuba con motivo de su muerte el 9 de octubre de 1967. En los titulares de la prensa oficial se repiten, aminorados por las noticias del huracán Matthew, las viejas fórmulas de “guerrillero heroico” y paladín de la libertad, que le adjudican a Guevara de la Serna.

Sin embargo, basta transitar por las calles de La Habana Vieja para ver al abuelo de Canek convertido en un fetiche turístico, rostro que se estampa sobre cualquier camiseta, cenicero o falso arte primitivo, para vender recuerdos e ilusiones. En cada bar colmado de estadounidenses se oye el estribillo de “aquí se queda la clara, la entrañable transparencia, de tu querida presencia Comandante Che Guevara”, que acarrea aplausos y propinas, muchas propinas.

Es la banda musical del fracaso de la utopía. Los acordes gastados que se repiten una y otra vez y que el nieto del polémico guerrillero recoge con acierto en su libro, donde la vida en la Cuba de Fidel Castro nunca pasó de ser eso: “Un disco rayado y churrioso. Millones de discos rayados y churriosos. La vida toda es un disco rayado y churrioso. Repetición tras repetición del disco rayado del tiempo y el churre”.
