The history of the Cuban rum is as old as the same colonization, because it is a product extracted from sugar cane that the Admiral brought to the island in his second trip to the continent. The ron Matusalem wins the first of many awards international in the years 1881, 1904 and 1911 by its recognized quality and purity.
Cuba won its independence in 1898. In spite of the Guerra Spanish-American it company continues to grow.
In 1912 Benjamín Camp returned to Spain, leaving the company in the hands of his brother and Evaristo Álvarez. Claudio Álvarez Lefebre, son of Evaristo Álvarez, joins the company and began to direct it for the next 25 years.

LA VIEJA HISTORIA DE UN RON: MATUSALEM, “HOY ALEGRE Y MAÑANA BIEN!”..
La historia del ron cubano es tan antigua como la colonización misma, pues es un producto extraído de la caña de azúcar que trajera a la Isla el Almirante en su segundo viaje a este Continente. Lo que sigue es conocido, las raíces de la caña procedente de Islas Canarias prendieron en la virgen y fértil tierra cubana donde encontró un microclima ideal para crecer, fundamentalmente alrededor de las aldeas aborígenes y hatos mercedados.
Existen muchas versiones sobre los orígenes del ron, como la que desde 1650 en esta área del Caribe había un ron que fabricaban los piratas y corsarios que merodeaban por la zona y que denominaron “rumbullion”.

Hacia Marzo de 1872, los hermanos españoles Benjamín y Eduardo Camp, junto a su amigo Evaristo Álvarez, se embarcan en una aventura fascinante: Crear el ron con el sabor más suave y con la mas alta calidad que Cuba hubiera producido jamás y en competencia con varias marcas que comenzaron hacia esa época en la cuna de los rones cubanos, Santiago de Cuba.
Abrieron una destilería de ron inspirándose en el proceso de elaboración y añejamiento de brandys y coñacs, creando una fórmula secreta que aun hoy permanece cuidadosamente guardada y que fue pasada de generación en generación.
Como dijimos, nace esta magnífica y delirante infusión en Santiago de Cuba con el nombre que sus originales productores escogieron.. Ron Matusalem. El nombre “Matusalem” es el español de Matusalén, el patriarca del Antiguo Testamento que las escrituras atestiguan vivió alrededor de 900 años. Fue elegido como referencia para el proceso de envejecimiento utilizados en la producción de la marca. El nombre es tomado de la popular proverbio español “Mas Viejo Que Matusalem”.
El ron Matusalem gana el primero de muchos premios internacionales en los años 1881, 1904 y 1911 por su reconocida calidad y pureza.
Cuba gana su independencia en 1898. A pesar de la Guerra Española-Americana la compañía continúa creciendo.
En 1912 Benjamín Camp regresa a España, dejando la compañía en las manos de su hermano y de Evaristo Álvarez. Claudio Álvarez Lefebre, hijo de Evaristo Álvarez, se une a la compañía y pasa a dirigirla durante los siguientes 25 años.
El ron de la época dorada de Cuba, Matusalem fue una de las estrellas de los años de esplendor cubano. La Ley Seca atraía al turismo americano al país caribeño, que vivía una etapa de glamour. La Habana, considerada “el París de las Américas”, era una ciudad cosmopolita llena de espectáculos y fiestas. En 1960, con la llegada al poder de Fidel Castro y el cambio de régimen, la familia se exilia y empiezan las tensiones por el control de la marca, lo mismo que ha ocurrido con los reconocidos rones Bacardi, adueñados, sin compensación alguna, por la dictadura cubana que todavía gobierna en Cuba.

Claudio Álvarez Salazar, bisnieto del fundador, en la década de 1990, litiga por el control de la compañía que en un acuerdo extrajudicial en 1995 le otorga el control de la misma.
