Plans to open a factory that will start production in 2018 in the area of the Mariel.
The Dutch multinational Unilever returned to the Cuban market after four years of absence with a factory whose works started today and that from 2018 will produce products of personal care and household hygiene in partnership with the State firm Intersuchel.
The Chairman of Unilever, Paul Polman, and the Cuban Minister of industry, Brown Salvador, laid the first stone of the facilities, which will invest about $ 35 million and will generate 300 direct jobs and many other indirect.
The new plant will occupy an area of 40 000 square meters in the special area of development of the Mariel (ZEDM), a large port and industrial area 45 kilometers from Havana in which the Cuban Government wants to promote the establishment of foreign companies with favourable fiscal conditions.
“For Unilever is a huge taste return to Cuba,” said Polman, who recalled that a “new stage” in the island for the multinational company, whose products were present in the Cuban market between 1994 and 2012 opens.
With a turnover exceeding the 53 000 billion euros in 2015, the multinational is present in some 190 countries and employs 169 000 people.
Soaps, shampoo and other products from hair care, toothpaste, deodorant and detergent for washing clothes will be the main products that will come out of the new factory, which Polman said that he will work with a focus on respect for the environment and sustainable development.
The project includes a system of generation of steam which will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and a treatment plant wastewater recycled water for irrigation, explained the Executive.

The decline in imports, which now largely depends on Cuba for its supply, is one of the main objectives of the Government of the island within the more reforms promoted in recent years to upgrade its economic and social model and promote the development of the country.

According to official data updated, the ZEDM has 19 business projects approved for installation and there are seven companies that have started operations.

LA MULTINACIONAL “UNILEVER” CONSTRUYE UNA FÁBRICA EN CUBA.
Planea abrir una fábrica que comenzará a producir en 2018 en la zona del Mariel.
La multinacional anglo-holandesa Unilever retornó al mercado cubano tras cuatro años de ausencia con una fábrica cuyas obras comenzaron hoy y que a partir de 2018 producirá productos de cuidado personal e higiene del hogar en alianza con la firma estatal Intersuchel.
El presidente de Unilever, Paul Polman, y el ministro cubano de Industria, Salvador Pardo, pusieron la primera piedra de las instalaciones, en las que se invertirán unos 35 millones de dólares y generarán 300 empleos directos y otros tantos indirectos.
La nueva planta ocupará una superficie de 40 000 metros cuadrados en la Zona Especial de Desarrollo del Mariel (ZEDM), una amplia área industrial y portuaria a 45 kilómetros de La Habana en la que el Gobierno cubano quiere promover la instalación de empresas extranjeras con condiciones fiscales ventajosas.
“Para Unilever es un enorme gusto regresar a Cuba”, afirmó Polman, quien recordó que se abre una “nueva etapa” en la isla para la multinacional, cuyos productos estuvieron presentes en el mercado cubano entre 1994 y 2012.
Con una facturación superior a los 53 000 millones de euros en 2015, la multinacional está presente en unos 190 países y emplea a 169 000 personas.
Jabones, champú y otros productos de cuidado capilar, pasta dental, desodorante y detergente para lavar ropa serán los principales productos que saldrán de la nueva fábrica, en la que Polman destacó que se trabajará con un enfoque de respeto medioambiental y desarrollo sostenible.
El proyecto incluye un sistema de generación de vapor que reducirá las emisiones de dióxido de carbono y una planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales que reciclará agua para riego, detalló el ejecutivo.
También destacó la voluntad de su empresa de “contribuir a reducir las importaciones” que ahora realiza Cuba para proveer su mercado interno.
La disminución de las importaciones, de las que ahora depende Cuba en gran medida para su abastecimiento, es uno de los principales objetivos del Gobierno de la isla dentro de las reformas aperturistas impulsadas en los últimos años para actualizar su modelo económico y social e impulsar el desarrollo del país.
El presidente del estatal Grupo Empresarial de la Industria Ligera (Gempil), Roberto Cabrera, confió por su parte en que la materialización de la empresa mixta conformada con Unilever a principios de este año “sirva como ejemplo y guía para atraer a otros inversionistas” del Reino Unido y Holanda.
También sostuvo que la planta será una de las principales productoras de bienes de consumo dentro de la isla, lo que contribuirá a “aumentar la calidad de vida de los cubanos”.
El de Unilever fue el segundo proyecto que comenzó esta semana sus obras en la Zona del Mariel, donde el pasado martes también se puso la primera piedra de las nuevas instalaciones de la cubano-brasileña Brascuba, con una inversión de 100 millones de dólares y que fabricará cigarrillos con tabaco cubano.
Según datos oficiales actualizados, la ZEDM cuenta con 19 proyectos empresariales aprobados para su instalación y ya hay siete empresas que han iniciado sus operaciones.
