JOSÉ MARTÍ MOTHER: THE STORY OF DOÑA LEONOR PÉREZ CABRERA.
Our José Martí was fathered thanks to the love between Mariano Martí and Doña Leonor Pérez, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, of December 17, 1828.
Its long and compound name, lesser-known and sparsely diffused is Leonor Antonia de Concepción Micaela Perez Cabrera.

Doña Leonor Pérez survived the terrible and somber lethal headaches, for which ever is trained the spirit, psychology, and the emotions of a person: the physical loss of son, fallen in combat in two rivers, that chilling May 19, 1895…
Dona Leonor died on June 19, 1907, the illustrious daughter of Tenerife that begat the great Cuban who was our Apostle José Martí y Pérez in Havana.
In Cuban schools, health institutions, maternity waiting homes and streets bear his name in Memorial to his memory.

LA MADRE DE JOSÉ MARTÍ: LA HISTORIA DE DOÑA LEONOR PÉREZ CABRERA.
Nuestro José Martí fue procreado gracias al amor entre Mariano Martí y Doña Leonor Pérez, nacida en Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Islas Canarias, el 17 de diciembre de 1828.
Su largo y compuesto nombre de pila, escasamente difundido y menos conocido es Leonor Antonia de la Concepción Micaela Pérez Cabrera.
Testimonios acerca de la familia dan fe de que el modelo de conducta en civismo, la formación ética y moral de Martí fue el resultado de las enseñanzas, la educación y los valores inculcados por su madre desde la cuna.
Dicen que la familia ascendente de Doña Leonor no era rica, pero si “desahogada”, en el sentido de poseer algunas propiedades en casas y otros medios de vida; sin embargo la hermosa joven, inteligente y alegre, creció bajo los rigores de la austeridad hogareña en Tenerife.
Se alfabetizó gracias a unas amigas suyas que a espaldas de sus padres, le enseñaron a leer y a escribir… y ¡cuidadito! con las indiscreciones de terceros en el hogar de Leonor, porque según los paradigmas de la sociedad discriminatoria en que nació era muy mal visto que las mujeres estudiaran y se superaran culturalmente. La instrucción podría atentar contra los cánones y la moral de aquellos tiempos.
En la más reluciente flor de su juventud, cumplidos los quince años, viaja a Cuba con su familia y dicen que en una de las pocas fiestas a las que pudo asistir conoció al joven valenciano Mariano Martí y Navarro, quien por aquellos días era sargento de artillería.
Todo indica que Cupido los flechó en el primer encuentro, pues desde los preliminares hubo sinergia y la pareja pasó de las simpatías amorosas primarias al noviazgo, hasta casarse en el mes del amor: en febrero de 1852.
Radicado el matrimonio, un año más tarde, en 1853, alumbró nuestro Apóstol de la independencia en la casa de La Habana Vieja, hoy museo ubicado en la calle que lleva el nombre de Leonor Pérez, antes identificada como la calle Paula.
Esa unión conyugal edificó una familia de ocho hijos. José Julián Martí Pérez, el primogénito y único varón. Sus siete hermanas se llamaban, por orden de edades de mayor a menor: Leonor, Mariana Matilde, María del Carmen, María del Pilar, Rita Amelia, Antonia Bruna y Dolores Eustaquia.
La vida de la madre de Martí transcurrió en medio de vicisitudes, incertidumbres, necesidades diversas, austeridades totales y la inestabilidad que imponen los viajes largos.
Una breve mirada a su biografía podría aseverarlo: Entre los años 1857 y 1859, viaja con su familia de Cuba a España. Luego regresa a tierra cubana para en 1874 establecerse en México. Martí había sido deportado a España en 1871. El 7 de marzo de 1877 la familia regresa a La Habana. Diez años más tarde Doña Leonor sale hacia Nueva York, donde residió en compañía de su hijo hasta las postrimerías de enero de 1888. Ya desde el 2 de febrero de 1887 había enviudado.
Imaginamos las penurias de su corazón que navegaron de tormenta en tormenta y sufrimientos por el hijo preso desde la adolescencia con los rigores de la crueldad en una cantera, enfermo, con el alma y la piel ensangrentada y grilletes en sus tobillos.
Doña Leonor Pérez sobrevivió al más terrible y sombrío de los dolores letales, para el que jamás está entrenado el espíritu, la psicología y las emociones de una persona: la pérdida física del hijo, caído en combate en Dos Ríos, aquel escalofriante 19 de mayo de 1895…
Dona Leonor murio un 19 de junio de 1907, la ilustre hija de Tenerife que engendró en La Habana al gran cubano que fue nuestro apostol Jose Martí y Pérez.
En Cuba escuelas, instituciones de salud, hogares maternos y calles llevan su nombre en recordación a su memoria.
