A delegation of officials from the Special Development Zone of Mariel (ZEDM) and the Ministry of Transport (MITRANS) begins a visit to the United States on Saturday that will run until February 3, reports the official press of the island.
It would be the first delegation of Havana that travels to the United States after the inauguration of the republican Donald Trump. The official website Cubadebate said that its members are “business managers”, but among those mentioned there are only officials appointed by the Government.
The report said that the purpose of the trip is to “exchange on business opportunities and foreign investment” on the island.
The government is trying to attract US entrepreneurs, but for the moment few businesses have prospered and prospective businesspeople are faced with obstacles, slowness and whimsy of the state bureaucracy.

The delegation that traveled to the United States this Saturday is composed of the director general of the ZEDM, Ana Teresa Igarza; In addition to José Sosa Barrios, deputy director of the Container Terminal of Mariel S.A .; Eradis González de la Peña, president of Almacenes Universales S.A .; René R. Fernández, MITRANS director of Maritime and River Transport and other officials, according to a note from the Havana Embassy in Washington.
One of the main objectives is to “promote the existing potentialities in the Cuban maritime-port sector, in particular with the new deepwater port” in the ZEDM, Cubadebate said.
During their stay in the United States, officials will visit six US ports and sign memoranda of understanding between the National Port Administration of Cuba and ports of Florida and Alabama.
He will hold meetings with officials from the US Chamber of Commerce and the American Association of Port Authorities and will exchange with congressmen, state officials and US businessmen from various sectors, official information added.

PRIMERA DELEGACIÓN OFICIAL CUBANA LLEGA A ESTADOS UNIDOS TRAS LA POSESIÓN DE DONALD TRUMP.
Una delegación de funcionarios de la Zona Especial de Desarrollo de Mariel (ZEDM) y el Ministerio de Transporte (MITRANS) comienza este sábado una visita a Estados Unidos que se extenderá hasta el 3 de febrero, informa la prensa oficial de la Isla.
Sería la primera delegación de La Habana que viaja a Estados Unidos tras la toma de posesión del republicano Donald Trump. La web oficial Cubadebate dijo que sus integrantes son “directivos empresariales”, pero entre los mencionados solo hay funcionarios designados por el Gobierno.
El reporte señaló que el propósito del viaje es “intercambiar sobre las oportunidades de negocios e inversión extranjera” en la Isla.
El Gobierno intenta atraer a los empresarios estadounidenses, pero por ahora pocos negocios han prosperado y los posibles interesados se tropiezan con obstáculos, la lentitud y los caprichos de la burocracia estatal.
Cuando parecía todo acordado, en noviembre de 2016 el Gobierno rechazó la instalación de la empresa fabricación de tractores Cleber en la ZEDM, alegando que no cumplía con los “estándares de innovación” que exige ese centro empresarial.
La delegación que viajó este sábado a Estados Unidos está integrada por la directora general de la ZEDM, Ana Teresa Igarza; además de por José Sosa Barrios, director adjunto de la Terminal de Contenedores de Mariel S.A.; Eradis González de la Peña, presidenta de Almacenes Universales S.A.; René R. Fernández, director de Transporte Marítimo y Fluvial del MITRANS y otros funcionarios, según una nota de la Embajada de La Habana en Washington.
Uno de los principales fines es “promover las potencialidades existentes en el sector marítimo-portuario cubano, en particular, con el nuevo puerto de aguas profundas” en la ZEDM, señaló Cubadebate.
Durante su estancia en Estados Unidos, los funcionarios visitarán seis puertos estadounidenses y firmarán memorandos de entendimiento entre la Administración Portuaria Nacional de Cuba y puertos de Florida y Alabama.
Asimismo, sostendrá encuentros con directivos de la Cámara de Comercio de Estados Unidos y la Asociación Americana de Autoridades Portuarias e intercambiará con congresistas, autoridades estaduales y empresarios norteamericanos de diversos sectores, añadió la información oficial.
