FLORIDA’S PORTS HOLD THE SIGNING OF AGREEMENTS WITH CUBA.
Two ports in the state of Florida (United States) announced Thursday that they will not sign the cooperation agreements with Cuba they had planned. Privately-owned Port Everglades and Palm Beach terminals have made this decision following the threat of Florida’s governor, Rick Scott, to cut public funding to ports that establish relations with the Cuban government. Scott reacted to the arrival in Port Everglades on Tuesday of the first export from Cuba to the United States in more than half a century, two containers with 40 tons of charcoal.
“I’m disappointed that some Florida ports may have agreements with the Cuban dictatorship,” the governor told Twitter. “I will recommend restricting state funds.” Scott belongs to the conservative wing of the Republican Party and is a trusted man of the new president of the United States, Donald Trump, who has said that he will reverse the reestablishment of bilateral relations with Cuba initiated by Barack Obama to return to a more demanding position with the Government Of Raul Castro, who claims progress in respect for civil liberties.

PUERTOS DE LA FLORIDA DETIENEN LA FIRMA DE CONVENIOS CON CUBA.
Dos puertos del estado de Florida (Estados Unidos) han anunciado este jueves que no firmarán los acuerdos de colaboración con Cuba que tenían previstos. Las terminales de Port Everglades y Palm Beach, de gestión privada, han tomado esta decisión tras la amenaza del gobernador de Florida, el republicano Rick Scott, de recortar la financiación pública a los puertos que estableciesen relaciones con el Gobierno cubano. Scott reaccionó así a la llegada a Port Everglades este martes de la primera exportación desde Cuba a Estados Unidos en más de medio siglo, dos contenedores con 40 toneladas de carbón vegetal.
“Me decepciona que algunos puertos de Florida puedan tener acuerdos con la dictadura cubana”, declaró a través de su Twitter el gobernador. “Recomendaré restringir los fondos estatales”. Scott pertenece al ala más conservadora del Partido Republicano y es un hombre de confianza del nuevo presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, que ha afirmado que revertirá el restablecimiento de relaciones bilaterales con Cuba iniciado por Barack Obama para retomar una postura más exigente con el Gobierno de Raúl Castro, al que reclama avances en el respeto a las libertades civiles.
La exportación de carbón que llegó esta semana a Florida fue posible gracias a que Obama, haciendo una excepción al embargo, las prohibiciones de comercio con Cuba vigentes desde los 60, permitió con una orden ejecutiva que se importasen a Estados Unidos bienes producidos por particulares, no por el Estado cubano. El carbón que llegó a Port Everglades había sido elaborado por una cooperativa privada de agricultores y el envío lo operó una empresa estatal.
La cancelación de las firmas de acuerdo se produce en medio de una visita oficial de representantes de la autoridad portuaria cubana a Estados Unidos. Estaba previsto que este jueves rubricasen su convenio con el puerto de Port Everglades y el viernes con el de Palm Beach, según el Miami Herald. El trato con Port Everglades se venía negociando desde mayo de 2016.

El presidente Trump no ha anunciado de momento ninguna decisión con respecto a Cuba. La intervención de su aliado político Scott cortando los tratos de los puertos con la isla podría encuadrarse en una nueva fase de complicaciones en las relaciones bilateras que Obama comenzó a restaurar.
El presidente de Cuba, Raúl Castro, se pronunció este miércoles por primera vez sobre la nueva Administración de Estados Unidos. En su intervención en una reunión de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (Celac) en la República Dominicana, dijo que su gobierno pretende “proseguir el diálogo respetuoso y la cooperación (…) con el nuevo gobierno del presidente Donald Trump”, aunque añadió que le parece “preocupante” su visión de las relaciones con la región.
