My mother wore a t-shirt with the face of the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, bought in the informal market in the early 1980s. Mi madre tenía una camiseta con el rostro del cantante español Julio Iglesias, comprada en el mercado informal a principios de los años ochenta. En una reunión de la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas le advirtieron que no podía seguir usándola. El autor de ‘La vida sigue igual’ había caído en la lista negra de la censura y aquella prenda de ropa se marchitó en una gaveta de nuestra casa.
Este enero, casi cuatro décadas después de aquel punto en mi infancia, su hijo Enrique Iglesias ha llegado a Cuba para filmar el videoclip del sencillo Súbeme la radio. Una legión de admiradores se prepara para seguirlo hasta las locaciones donde trabajará junto al director Alejandro Pérez, el músico Descemer Bueno y el dúo puertorriqueño Zion y Lenox.
Aunque los medios nacionales han manejado con cautela la visita de Iglesias, la noticia se ha extendido rápidamente entre la gente. Habrá, sin dudas, aglomeraciones alrededor de los lugares por donde planea moverse el cantante, al estilo de las provocadas por Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katty Perry, las Kardashians o Madonna, durante su estancia en la Isla.
Este miércoles, muchas jóvenes suspiran por lograr un autógrafo del exitoso artista y aguardan para capturar con su teléfono móvil un instante en que él se acerque, pase, se haga ver. Son mujeres que tienen la misma edad que mi madre en aquellos años cuando le prohibieron usar una camiseta con el rostro del otro Iglesias, el prohibido.
Mi madre nunca pudo ir a un concierto de Julio Iglesias. Creo que ya ni siquiera escucha sus canciones. Esta semana, otras cubanas como ella tendrán su pequeña revancha histórica.

Por aquel entonces, las autoridades cubanas no dieron explicaciones sobre la exclusión. Solo hubo rumores y frases a medio decir: “Hizo declaraciones contra Cuba”, se comentaba en algunos círculos oficiales; “Julio le fue a cantar a Pinochet a Chile”, advertían los más furibundos militantes, en alusión al viaje del artista en 1977 a ese país sudamericano.
Lo cierto es que Iglesias, el padre, pasó a engrosar el listado de los cantantes que no podían difundirse en la radio y la televisión. Su nombre se sumó a otros excluidos como Celia Cruz, Olga Guillot, Nelson Ned y hasta José Feliciano. Este último solo volvió a transmitirse en los medios cubanos tiempo después.
Pocos años antes de que fuera “presillado”, la película inspirada en la vida de Julio Iglesias había sido un éxito de taquilla en los cines de la Isla. Muchos espectadores se ufanaban de haber visto el filme en varias ocasiones en un mismo día y los estribillos de sus canciones desplazaron a las canciones de la Nueva Trova.

Iglesias, amén de gustos artísticos, significó un viento fresco en un momento en que la música cubana se llenaba de consignas. Hablaba de romance, amor, pérdida y olvido, en un país donde se había aparcado el bolero y la única pasión permitida era la que podía sentirse por la causa y la Revolución. Arrasó entre los jóvenes, hartos de tanta trinchera y necesitados de sentirse más carne y menos utopía.
Mi madre nunca pudo ir a un concierto de Julio Iglesias. Creo que ya ni siquiera escucha sus canciones. Esta semana, otras cubanas como ella tendrán su pequeña revancha histórica. Otro Iglesias ha llegado, sus canciones son diferentes y la Cuba en la que aterriza poco se parece a aquella Isla sovietizada de antaño. La música acaba de ganarle una partida a la ideología.
