Serena Maria Auñón-Chancellor
The Cuban-American astronaut Serena Maria Auñón-Chancellor will perform her first mission in the cosmos in November 2018 when she is sent to the International Space Station from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, NASA reported in a statement this week.
Auñón-Chancellor will join the crews of Expeditions 58 and 59 together with the astronaut of the Canadian Space Agency David Saint-Jacques and a Russian cosmonaut.
Born in 1978 in Indianapolis, Colorado, and a Cuban father, Auñón-Chancellor joined the American astronaut corps in 2009, and has been at NASA since 2006, when he became a flight surgeon, the note said.
She also served as deputy director of medical operations for NASA’s Orion spacecraft before being selected as an astronaut.
Cuban American has a degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University, a doctorate in medicine from the Health Sciences Center at the University of Texas, Houston, and is certified in internal medicine and aerospace.
The astronaut shared in her Twitter account an image in a winter survival training aimed at the mission on the International Space Station.
Auñón-Chancellor is the daughter of Jorge Auñón, a Cuban emigre, also an electrical engineer, who left the island in October 1960.

La astronauta cubanoamericana Serena María Auñón-Chancellor realizará su primera misión en el cosmos en noviembre de 2018 cuando sea enviada a la Estación Espacial Internacional desde Baikonur, Kazajastán, informó esta semana la NASA en un comunicado.
Auñón-Chancellor se unirá a las tripulaciones de las Expediciones 58 y 59 junto con el astronauta de la Agencia Espacial Canadiense David Saint-Jacques y un cosmonauta ruso.

Nacida en 1978 en Indianápolis, Colorado, y de padre cubano, Auñón-Chancellor se unió al cuerpo de astronautas estadounidense en 2009, y ha estado en la NASA desde 2006, cuando se convirtió en cirujano de vuelo, destacó la nota.
También de desempeñó como directora adjunta de operaciones médicas para la nave espacial Orion de la NASA antes de ser seleccionada como astronauta.
La cubanoamericana es licenciada en ingeniería eléctrica por la Universidad George Washington, tiene un doctorado en medicina del Centro de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Texas, Houston, así como está certificada en medicina interna y aeroespacial.
La astronauta compartió en su cuenta de Twitter una imagen en un entrenamiento de supervivencia en invierno con vistas a la misión en la Estación Espacial Internacional.
Auñón-Chancellor es hija de Jorge Auñón, un emigrado cubano, también ingeniero eléctrico, que salió de la Isla en octubre de 1960.
