En enero de 1887 llegó a La Habana, la capital cubana un célebre torero español nombrado, Luis Mazzantini Eguía, de singular personalidad dentro y fuera de las plazas y técnicamente reconocido como un gran estoqueador, al extremo de llegar a matar más de tres mil ejemplares y ganar hasta seis mil pesetas por cada corrida.

Su estancia en la villa de San Cristobal de La Habana resultó motivo de interés para los caballeros de entonces y quedó prendida en la memoria del pueblo, quizá por su bien ganada renombre en el ruedo o por su relación amorosa con la actriz francesa Sarah Bernhardt, famosa también por sus excentricidades,

Cargada de exóticos presentes provenientes de sus giras por Suramérica, la Bernhardt había desembarcado estrepitosamente por primera vez en Habana en 1886, para sumar a sus experiencias teatrales y sociales una vehemente y fugaz historia de amor, que ya en los límites de la leyenda, apenas se recuerda.

El romance entre ambas figuras devino la comidilla del momento en las reuniones nocturnas de las clases más acomodadas de La Habana, por la facilidad con la cual el prestigioso matador vasco logró conquistar a la diva, en una muestra elocuente del que todo lo puede, incluso alejado de las fiestas taurinas.

El fenómeno Mazzantini era de tal magnitud que inspiró en Cuba toda una moda de camisas, pantalones, sombreros, cigarros y hasta obras de teatro con su nombre, e incluso auspició a partir de abril de 1898 la construcción del frontón Jai Alai, inaugurado entre las calles Concordía, Lucena, Marqués González y Virtudes tres años después

Con esas referencias sobre don Luis, como era conocido en su natal España, y el hecho de desempeñarse a su retiro del controversial oficio de matador, como Concejal en el Ayuntamiento de Madrid y miembro de la Diputación Provincial, los cubanos comenzaron a repetir una frase que trasciende de generación en generación.

Así los oriundos de la isla caribeña dueños de una reputación sin límite en el arte de acuñar frases populares comenzaron a decir: “eso no lo hace ni Mazantín el torero” que suele aflorar a los labios de hombres y mujeres y hasta los propios niños, cuando nos encontramos ante una tarea casi imposible de realizar.
