For the next cruise season, in March 2018, the American company Norwegian Cruise Line plans to expand its operations to Cuba to 33 departures, each of four days with an overnight stay in Havana, Martí Noticias reported.
The Miami-based company will begin round-trip travel from the Port of Miami to the Caribbean on the Norwegian Sky, adding to the 30 departures it is currently offering through December 2017.
“We look forward to providing more opportunities for our customers to enjoy this incredible destination in 2018,” added Stuart. Sales and reservations for these cruise trips begin on April 20.
According to Marti Noticias, cruise companies offer excursions in Cuba for up to 15 days, an activity duly approved by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
At the same time the international cables announced the news that the Miami-based charter Choice Air, which was planning to start a freight service between Pittsburgh International Airport and Cuba, has suspended the project “indefinitely”, according to Know the media a Pittsburgh airport spokesman.
Choice Air plans to offer up to two weekly flights to the island, but spokesman Bob Kerlik said they do not expect to get the idea back at least throughout the year. Kerlik also told the Tribune Review that although Cuba is still a Hot Spot, and it is in the company’s sights, the reality is that with so-called regular flights “charter demand faded.”
The airport, with federal approval since 2011 to offer nonstop flights to Cuba, has hardly been able to make a trip to the island.
The official added that the indefinite suspension of the charters is a “hard blow” for the University of Pittsburgh, which “sent every year” a group of 25 students to Havana.
From now on, “students will have to travel to Miami, or Fort Lauderdale and take flights to the island,” said Jeff Whitehead, director of the study abroad office at the University.

Para la próxima temporada de cruceros, en marzo de 2018, la compañía estadounidense Norwegian Cruise Line proyecta ampliar sus operaciones con destino Cuba a 33 salidas, cada una de cuatro días con estancia de una noche en La Habana, informó Martí Noticias.
La compañía, con base en Miami, comenzará a realizar viajes de ida y vuelta desde el Puerto de Miami hacia el Caribe en la embarcación Norwegian Sky, que se suman a las 30 salidas que está ofreciendo actualmente hasta diciembre de 2017.
“Estamos ansiosos por ofrecer mayores oportunidades para que nuestros clientes puedan disfrutar este increíble destino en 2018”, agregó Stuart. Las ventas y reservaciones de estos viajes de cruceros comienzan el 20 de abril próximo.
Según destaca Martí Noticias, las empresas de cruceros ofertan excursiones en Cuba de hasta 15 días, actividad aprobada debidamente por la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC, por sus siglas en inglés).
al mismo tiempo los cables internacionales dieron a conocer la noticia que la compañia charter Choice Aire, con sede en Miami, que planeaba iniciar recientemente un servicio de flete entre el aeropuerto internacional de Pittsburgh y Cuba, ha suspendido el proyecto “indefinidamente”, según hizo saber a los medios un portavoz del aeropuerto de Pittsburgh.
Choice Air prentedía ofrecer hasta dos vuelos semanales a la isla, pero el portavoz Bob Kerlik dijo que no esperan retomar la idea al menos en el transcurso del año. Kerlik dijo además al diario Tribune Review que aunque Cuba sigue siendo un Hot Spot, y está en la mira de la compañía, la realidad es que con los llamados vuelos regulares “la demanda de charter se desvaneció”.
El aeropuerto, con aprobación federal desde 2011 para ofrecer vuelos sin escalas a Cuba, apenas si ha podido efectuar un viaje a la isla.
El funcionario añadió que la suspensión indefinida de los charters supone un “duro golpe” para la Universidad de Pittsburgh, que “enviaba cada año” un grupo de 25 estudiantes a La Habana.
A partir de ahora, “los estudiantes deberán viajar a Miami, o Fort Lauderdale y tomar vuelos hacia la isla”, dijo Jeff Whitehead, director de la oficina de Estudios en el Extranjero de la mencionada Universidad.
