The late Cuban musician Juan Formell bequeathed a myriad of dance classics, many of his authorship and others that owe his popularity to the great founder of Los Van Van. Among them is El guararey de Pastora, emblematic example of the changüí-shake that Formell created and that never completely convinced the teacher Elio Revé when he had the visionary bass player in his ranks.
“Pastorita has guararey with me, I do not know why it will be,” says the chorus inspired by Pastora Yuani Sayú, who died in 2013 missing three years to reach a century of life.
Nobody knows for sure that it is “to have guararey”, but they all knew the muse of a classic in the repertoire of Los Van Van, that still touches it in the remix of its old initial successes.

It was undoubtedly a hymn of the dancers, whose authorship led to a litigation that even went to court to determine if Roberto Baute, Pedro Speck or the Pastorita herself. According to sentence 336 of June 14, 1976, Baute was the real composer of that piece, which narrates the war they made to the author for falling in love with Petronilla, the daughter of Pastora.
Baute lived then in the Sigual, a village in the eastern province of Guantanamo, and in a dance he fell in love with Petronila, much younger than him, but with whom he finally had two children. Apparently Pastora was not very grateful for that affair, one because the man was married, the other because he had taken his daughter for 20 years, and opposed the relationship. That is, he armed Guararey to Baute.
“Pastorita has guararey with me, I do not know why it will be, I have never done anything to her, she is my friend of the soul I carry it in the heart”, defended Baute with his music montuna, without suspecting that those verses would travel all Cuba and Part of the world thanks to Formell.

Born in Boquerón de Yateras in 1916, Pastora was newly discovered only a decade ago in the town of Uveral, because until then it was believed that she was an imaginary personage.
Pastorita danced until her legs allowed her, and who knows if she could do it again in the afterlife of her son-in-law Baute, the unparalleled paul of the changüisero Elio Revé, and now the immortal tumbao of Juan Formell.

Entre estos destaca El guararey de Pastora, emblemático ejemplo del changüí-shake que creó Formell y que nunca convenció del todo al maestro Elio Revé cuando tuvo al visionario bajista en sus filas.

Nadie sabe a ciencia cierta que es “tener guararey”, pero todos conocían a la musa de un clásico en el repertorio de Los Van Van, que aún lo toca en el remix de sus viejos éxitos iniciales.

Al parecer a Pastora no le hacía demasiada gracia aquel amorío, una porque el hombre era casado, y otra porque le llevaba 20 años a su hija, y se opuso a la relación. O sea, le armó guararey a Baute.
“Pastorita tiene guararey conmigo, yo no sé por qué será, yo nunca le he hecho nada, ella es mi amiga del alma la llevo en el corazón”, se defendió Baute con su música montuna, sin sospechar que esos versos viajarían toda Cuba y parte del mundo gracias a Formell.
