El mecenas cubano Roberto Polo cede su colección a la tierra de sus abuelos.España recibe una de las donaciones artísticas más importantes de su historia, valorada en más de 50 millones de euros.
Los abuelos del multimillonario cubanoamericano Roberto Polo, nacido en La Habana en 1951, eran gallegos. Por eso este filántropo, mecenas y ex socio de la casa de subastas Sotheby’s se confiesa feliz de que su vasta colección de 7.000 obras de arte moderno y contemporáneo se quede definitivamente en España. Las ciudades de Toledo y Cuenca acogerán a partir de 2018 esculturas, fotografías y pinturas de forma completamente gratuita.
Propietaria de Polotanque S.A. la familia de Polo, era especializada en la construcción de tanques de acero para refinerías de petróleo, puentes, vías ferroviarias e ingenios azucareros en toda Centroamérica. Tras la expropiación de sus bienes, en 1961, la familia se fue de Cuba rumbo a Miami y después pasó por Lima, Massachusetts, Washington y Nueva York. Polo estudió Arte en la Corcoran School de Washington y en la Universidad de Columbia de Nueva York y se inició con apenas 20 años en el mundo del coleccionismo. Entre los museos que se han beneficiado de sus donaciones están el Metropolitan, el Louvre, el Victoria & Albert, el Minneapolis Institute of Art, el Nelson Atkins Museum, el Château de Chantilly y los Museos Reales de Arte e Historia de Bruselas.
El Gobierno de Castilla-La Mancha, del socialista Emiliano García-Page, ha aprobado ya la operación mediante la cual se exhibirá la colección de Polo en el Convento de Santa Fe, en el casco histórico de Toledo, y el viejo edificio del Archivo Provincial de Cuenca, antigua sede del Tribunal de la Inquisición. Otras tres ciudades españolas y dos importantes capitales, que no han sido desveladas —una de EE UU y otra de Europa—, pretendían este tesoro de valor no calculado pero cuya póliza de seguros asciende a más de 50 millones de euros.
La colección la integran obras de vanguardia histórica de autores como Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Oskar Schlemmer, Kurt Schwitters, Max Ernst, George Vantongerloo o Paul Joostens. Además, también hay creaciones de artistas vivos como Larry Poons, Martin Kline, Ed Moses, Karen Gunderson, Melissa Kretschmer, Jan Vanriet, Mil Ceulemans o Werner Mannaers.
El primer envío de Polo será un conjunto de 500 obras, 250 a cada ciudad, que irán rotando y dando entrada a otras piezas de la gigantesca colección. En Toledo, que se queda con piezas que abarcan desde finales del siglo XIX a la actualidad, se queda como colección permanente un grueso formado por obras de Schmidt-Rottluff, Schlemmer, Schwitters, Moholy-Nagy o Max Ernst.
España pasa, gracias a este acuerdo, a poseer un importante tesoro precisamente en un periodo artístico en el que tenía importantes carencias. Algo similar ocurrió cuando se logró la Colección Thyssen para Madrid que, eso sí, supuso un desembolso de casi 280 millones de euros al Estado, además del costo de la rehabilitación del edificio que la alberga.

The Cuban patron Roberto Polo gives his collection to the land of his grandparents. Spain receives one of the most important artistic donations in its history, valued at more than 50 million euros.
The grandparents of Cuban-American billionaire Roberto Polo, born in Havana in 1951, were Galicians. That is why this philanthropist, patron and former member of the auction house Sotheby’s is happy to say that his vast collection of 7,000 works of modern and contemporary art will definitely remain in Spain. The cities of Toledo and Cuenca will host sculptures, photographs and paintings from 2018 completely free of charge.
Owner of Polotanque S.A. The Polo family, specialized in the construction of steel tanks for oil refineries, bridges, railways and sugar mills throughout Central America. After the expropriation of his property, in 1961, the family left Cuba for Miami and then passed through Lima, Massachusetts, Washington and New York. Spain thanks to this agreement, to possess an important treasure precisely in an artistic period in which it had important shortcomings. Something similar happened when the Thyssen Collection for Madrid was achieved, which, yes, involved a disbursement of almost 280 million euros to the State (in addition to the cost of the rehabilitation of the building that houses it).
