(OPINIÓN) EL CAPITALISMO DEBERÍA SER NUESTRA ARMA AL MOSTRARLE ESCOGER AL PUEBLO CUBANO.
Compromiso o embargo? Esa es la cuestión no sólo en Cuba sino también en lugares como Irán, Rusia y China. ¿Debemos negociar o debemos retener nuestro comercio con la esperanza de cambiar el comportamiento de otras naciones? ¿Cuál tendrá más impacto?
Durante más de medio siglo, hemos tenido un embargo con Cuba. No sólo los Castros sobrevivieron, sino que la ordeñaron para todo lo que valió la pena. Como la única fuente de información sobre la isla durante décadas, alimentaron el nacionalismo de los cubanos que permanecieron en Cuba para culpar a Estados Unidos por cualquiera de sus escaseces, en lugar del verdadero culpable: el socialismo.
El embargo no hizo nada para derrotar a Castro, absolutamente nada. Es posible que lo mantenga en el poder más tiempo debido a la capacidad que el embargo le dio para controlar más a su pueblo.
El presidente Obama y yo estuvimos de acuerdo en muy poco, pero su pequeña apertura con Cuba fue una de esas áreas. Desde su decisión de permitir más viajes y comercio con Cuba, los estadounidenses están visitando en cifras récord y en sus viajes están mostrando la grandeza del capitalismo estadounidense: la riqueza. Cada dólar que queda en manos de taxistas, trabajadores de hoteles, camareras y aparcacoches es una muestra de lo que les espera a los cubanos si rechazan el socialismo.
No podemos difundir la democracia a través de la fuerza, como lo hemos demostrado una y otra vez en nuestra reciente política exterior. Pero podemos modelar el capitalismo al mundo, exportarlo a través de nuestro pueblo y nuestros bienes y ganar el debate sin que se dispare una sola bala.
Cuando yo era niño, mi familia era virulentamente anticomunista. Todavía lo somos. Nos oponíamos a la apertura de la China “roja” y todo lo que eso implicaba. Estuvimos equivocados. China todavía puede tener aspectos del socialismo, pero nadie puede argumentar que no es más capitalista y más libre que antes de que abrimos las relaciones diplomáticas y el comercio.
En lugar de ocultar nuestro capitalismo detrás de un embargo fallido, debemos derribar los muros de las restricciones comerciales y abrir los viajes y el comercio aún más. En lugar de permitir que los socialistas continúen su propaganda sin oposición, debemos tener suficiente confianza en el capitalismo para dejarlos ir cabeza a cabeza.
Veamos qué elegirán los cubanos cuando se enfrenten a iPhones, coches modernos y turistas con puñados de dólares comprando servicios y bienes cubanos.
No temo al gobierno de Cuba. No temo la competencia entre el capitalismo y el socialismo. Terminar el embargo ahora y el capitalismo, como las olas interminables que recorren la costa cubana, erosionarán día a día el débil dominio del socialismo, hasta que la libertad llegue a Cuba – no con un desembarco de tropas en la playa sino en la constatación de que la pobreza y la pobreza El socialismo son, de hecho, sinónimos.

(OPINION) CAPITALISM SHOULD BE OUR WEAPON OF CHOICE IN CUBA.
Engagement or embargo? That is the question not just in Cuba but also in places like Iran, Russia, and China. Should we trade, or should we withhold our trade in hopes of changing the behavior of other nations? Which will have more impact?
For over half a century, we have had an embargo with Cuba. Not only did the Castros survive it, but they milked it for everything it was worth. As the only source of information on the island for decades, they stoked the nationalism of those Cubans who remained in Cuba to blame America for any of their shortages, instead of the true culprit: socialism.
The embargo did nothing to defeat Castro—absolutely nothing. It is possible it kept him in power longer because of the ability the embargo gave him to further control his people.
President Obama and I agreed on very little, but his slight opening with Cuba was one of those areas. Since his decision to allow more travel and commerce with Cuba, Americans are visiting in record numbers and on their trips they are displaying the greatness of American capitalism: wealth. Every dollar left in the hands of cab drivers, hotel workers, waitresses, and valets is a show of what awaits Cubans if they reject socialism.
We can’t spread democracy through force, as we have shown time and again in our recent foreign policy. But we can model capitalism to the world, export it through our people and goods, and win the debate without one bullet being fired.
When I was a kid, my family was virulently anti-communist. We still are. We were opposed to the opening of “Red” China and all that entailed. We were wrong. China may still have aspects of socialism, but no one can argue it isn’t more capitalist and freer than before we opened diplomatic relations and trade.
Instead of hiding our capitalism behind a failed embargo, we should tear down the walls of trade restriction and open up travel and trade even more. Instead of allowing the socialists to continue their propaganda unopposed, we should have sufficient confidence in capitalism to let them go head to head.
Let’s see what Cubans will choose when they come face to face with iPhones, modern cars, and tourists with fistfuls of dollars buying Cuban services and goods.
I don’t fear the government of Cuba. I don’t fear competition between capitalism and socialism. End the embargo now and capitalism, like the endless waves that lap the Cuban shore, will erode the weak grasp of socialism, day by day, until freedom comes to Cuba – not with a beach landing of troops, but in the realization that poverty and socialism are, in fact, synonyms.
