CUBAN MEMORIES OF THE MEXICAN COMPOSER AGUSTÍN LARA.
Agustín Lara, the famous Mexican autodidact composer author of over 600 songs, was, like other great figures of his country, a frequent visit in Havana.
Such spiritual closeness is reciprocal because neither can speak of the Mexican musician-poet without mentioning the Cuban capital, to which he dedicated memorable pieces, and where he always felt at home.
It is not surprising that the first artistic destination of Don Agustín Lara outside of Mexico, is precisely the Cuban capital where he arrived next to the young Pedro Vargas, already by then a well-known singer.
An anecdote.
One night the author of Granada, Noche de Ronda and Palmera gave a recital in a Havana theater when a girl, from the audience, exclaimed aloud for the artist to hear:
“Lara does not sing, he barks.
He was certainly a front-line composer, but the worst performer of his songs.
Lara, apparently, was not offended by the comment; He did not even flinch. He placed the cigarette, which seemed eternal in it, on the edge of the ashtray. He returned on his piano, let some notes and said:
“Well, miss, we’re going to keep on barking.”
Known as the Golden Flaco, Lara was really called Ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Lara and Aguirre del Pino. He was born in Veracruz on October 3, 1897 and died in Mexico City on November 6, 1970. His love affairs were sounded with María Felix, who inspired her one of her best known compositions, María bonita.
In Cuba his memory is latent for many years in a sculpture by the sculptor José Villa Soberón, this is two meters high, shows it in a coat and tie, highlighting its thinness. The left hand rests on the right arm, while the right hand rises before his face to insinuate the presence of a cigarette between his fingers.
For many, Agustín Lara represents the transition from Mexican dance to bolero of Cuban origin, to which he printed a style of his own.

Agustín Lara, el famoso compositor autodidacto mexicano autor de más 600 canciones, fue, como otras grandes figuras de su país, fue visita frecuente en La Habana.
Tal cercanía espiritual es recíproca pues tampoco puede hablarse del músico-poeta mexicano sin mencionar a la capital cubana, a la que dedicó piezas memorables, y donde siempre se sintió como en su casa.
No es extrañar que el primer destino artístico de don Agustín Lara fuera de México, sea precisamente la capital cubana adonde llegó junto a el joven Pedro Vargas, ya para entonces un cantante bastante conocido.
Una anecdota.
Una noche el autor de Granada, Noche de ronda y Palmera ofrecía un recital en un teatro habanero cuando una muchacha, desde el público, exclamó en voz alta para que el artista la oyera:
—Lara no canta, ladra.
Era ciertamente un compositor de primera línea, pero el peor intérprete de sus canciones.
A Lara, en apariencia, no le ofendió el comentario; ni siquiera se inmutó. Colocó el cigarrillo, que en él parecía eterno, en el borde del cenicero. Volvió sobre su piano, dejó escuchar algunas notas y dijo:
—Bien, señorita, vamos a seguir ladrando.
Conocido como el Flaco de Oro, Lara se llamaba realmente Ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Lara y Aguirre del Pino. Nació en Veracruz, el 3 de octubre de 1897 y murió en la Ciudad de México el 6 de noviembre de 1970. Fueron sonados sus amores con María Félix, que le inspiró una de sus composiciones más conocidas, María bonita.
En Cuba su recuerdo es latente por muchos años en una escultura del escultor José Villa Soberón, esta tiene dos metros de altura, lo muestra en saco y corbata, resaltando su delgadez. La mano izquierda descansa en el brazo derecho, mientras que la diestra se levanta ante su cara para insinuar la presencia de un cigarrillo entre los dedos.
Para muchos Agustín Lara representa la transición de la danza mexicana al bolero de origen cubano, al que imprimió un estilo muy propio.
