CUBA AND UNITED STATES PORTS SIGN COMMERCIAL AGREEMENT

“This is an opportunity to continue trade in agricultural products between the United States and Cuba,” said Houston Port Authority commercial director Ricky W. Kunz after signing the agreement. Today’s memorandum will make it easier for Houston farmers to trade food products on the island like chicken, rice and beans, he said.
Concerning the future impact of the Trump Administration’s measures towards Cuba, Kunz chose not to give his opinion pending the formal announcement of the new regulations to be made by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on September 15. For his part, the general director of the Maritime Administration of Cuba, José Joaquín Prado, considered the agreement “very important” to develop a “prosperous and sustainable” commercial exchange.

La Administración Portuaria de Cuba y la Autoridad Portuaria de Houston (Texas, EE.UU.) firmaron hoy en La Habana un memorando de “amistad y cooperación comercial” con el fin de facilitar y promover el comercio, generar nuevos negocios y fomentar una relación bilateral “más estrecha”.
Se trata del primer acuerdo suscrito entre autoridades portuarias de Cuba y EE.UU. tras el cambio de política hacia la isla dispuesto en junio pasado por el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, con la firma de una orden ejecutiva para revertir el acercamiento bilateral de los últimos tiempos. La suscripción de este acuerdo “demuestra la voluntad del sector marítimo portuario estadounidense de estrechar relaciones comerciales, de amistad y cooperación con Cuba basadas en el respeto mutuo”, indicó el Ministerio del Transporte de la isla en una nota entregada a la prensa.
“Esta es una oportunidad de continuar los intercambios comerciales de productos agrícolas entre los Estados Unidos y Cuba”, declaró el director comercial de la Autoridad Portuaria de Houston, Ricky W. Kunz, después de firmar el acuerdo. El memorando de hoy facilitará a los agricultores de Houston comerciar productos agroalimentarios en la isla como pollo, arroz y fríjoles, señaló.
Sobre la repercusión futura de las medidas de la Administración Trump hacia Cuba, Kunz prefirió no opinar a la espera del anuncio formal de las nuevas regulaciones que hará la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC) el próximo 15 de septiembre. Por su parte, el director general de la Administración Marítima de Cuba, José Joaquín Prado, consideró el acuerdo “muy importante” para desarrollar un intercambio comercial “próspero y sostenible”.
