CUBAN CHARACTERS: OF LINEAGE AND NOBLE ANCESTRY, A “MARQUISE” IN HAVANA.
Havana is a picturesque city populated by unique characters that fill it with magic. If I close my eyes, I can still see, among others, the worthy “Knight of Paris” and the mischievous “Marquise” of Old Havana.
The “Marquise” was contemporary with the Caballero de París and strolled through the Central Park of Havana where tourists abounded with cameras on their shoulders. Every day he passed by the offices of Godoy-Zayan, the insurance and banking, where they gave him cash to bring coffee for milk and bread and butter (not used to ask for toast). Her real name was Isabel Veitia, La Marquesa Isabel Veitía, but she preferred to be called Marquesa.
The Marquesa of the Central Park, a person of blue blood, of popular “lineage and noble ancestry” rather than by its plump and jacarandous figure, attracted the attention of the passersby by its finesse and form of dress.
Isabel Veitía, a short-mulatto woman, who unfurled Havana with her veil of tulle cap and a shabby mantilla over her shoulders, fanning herself gracefully as if to accentuate her dreamy aristocratic origin.

La Habana es una ciudad pintoresca poblada desde siempre por personajes únicos que la llenan de magia. Si cierro los ojos puedo ver todavía, entre otros, al digno “Caballero de París” y a la pícara “Marquesa” de la Habana Vieja.
La “Marquesa” fue contemporánea del Caballero de París y se paseaba por el Parque Central de La Habana donde abundaban los turistas con cámaras fotográficas al hombro. Todos los días pasaba por las oficinas de Godoy-Zayán, el de los seguros y banca, donde le daban dinero en efectivo para que trajera para todos los empleados el café con leche y el pan con mantequilla (no se acostumbraba a pedir tostadas). Su nombre verdadero era Isabel Veitia, La Marquesa Isabel Veitía, pero ella prefería que la llamaran Marquesa.
La Marquesa del Parque Central, personaje de sangre azul, de “alcurnia y abolengo” popular más que por su figura rolliza y jacarandosa, llamaba poderosamente la atención de los transeúnte por su desparpajo y forma de vestir.
Era Isabel Veitía, una mulata de baja estatura, que desandaba La Habana con su sombrerito de velo del tul y una raída mantilla sobre los hombros, abanicándose con gracia como queriendo acentuar su soñado origen aristocrático.
En su andar por las calles aledañas al espacio arbolado capitalino, llevaba siempre en sus manos una estropiada carterita de charol y completaban su llamativo atuendo muy dañado por el uso, unos increíbles zapatos plásticos de tono dorado
Los interesada en tomárle una foto tenía que pagar por ello en billetes, ya que según ella su nobleza y linaje de cuna no le permitían aceptar simples monedas y bastaba que la pícara mujer lo dijera para que los curiosos la complacieran.
Nunca nadie supo en que circunstancias perdió la razón esta auténtica y pintoresca personalidad, que en ocasiones se ganaba la risa y el dinero con sus bromas de doble sentido que divertían sin ofender a quienes la escuchaban.
Isabel Veitía se escogió ella misma como figura relevante de la mágica realeza habanera, y vivió siempre en un paraíso imaginario de emociones, anécdotas, frases y símbolos como parte indisoluble de la rica historia de la isla grande.
