From the productions in which our compatriot Desi Arnaz took part and of which we have spoken and written in our reports, it took some years to see others young actors and actress on screen of North American films. 1983 was the winner when Havana’s Andy Garcia (full name Andrés Arturo García Menéndez) made his feature debut in the role of Richard Michaels’ comedy “Blue Skies Again.” Andy had left Cuba very young – he really could not know the country that gave birth to him – with his family against the process begun in 1959 in Cuba. His father was a lawyer and his mother, an English teacher. As an actor he began to excel in works at his high school in Miami Beach, and from there he studied drama at Florida International University. For his work for more than 4 decades in the cinema, Andy can be considered the best Cuban actor in Hollywood of all time. A key feature of Andy is the privacy in your life and that of your family.
There is a Cuban actress, born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, who, but whose childhood spent all the time in Venezuela and became Miss Universe Teenager (adolescent) in 1971 after being the winner of Miss Venezuela. I am referring to the beautiful Maria Conchita Alonso, who made her film debut in the action-adventure film of Italo-Dominican-Mexican production “Savana-Sesso e Diamanti (1978)” by director Guido Leoni. María Conchita initially starred in Latin American films, and in 1984 she made her Hollywood debut in the comedy-drama “A Russian in New York”. His work has not only been in film, but has also performed successfully on Broadway.
The other Cuban, whose takeoff was very promising in the movies, was Steven Bauer, whose real name is Esteban Ernesto Echevarría, also Havana as Andy Garcia, and son of teacher and father, pilot of Cubana de Aviación. Steven adopted the Bauer like surname of his grandfathers by maternal line, which was Jewish refugee of Germany and was nicknamed Bauer. Initially he wanted to be a musician, but then changed his mind. He studied acting at a Miami-Dade college, then moved to the Department of Theater Arts at the University of Miami, and in 1980 moved to New York to continue his acting studies under the guidance of Stella Adler. His film debut was in crime film “The Price of Power (1983)” by director Brian De Palma starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. The performance of Bauer as Manolo Ribera was really convincing.
Bauer then starred in a drama-thriller “Thief of Passions (1984)” by Douglas Day Stewart, where again his performance was well received. For the TV he starred in the action film “The Sword of Gideon (1986)” by Michael Anderson, where he plays the role of a young Israeli officer, who is charged with the execution of all those Palestinians involved in the massacre of Israeli athletes in the Munich Olympic Games (1972). Their performances occasionally go unnoticed, they are more in distribution papers and more than everything in films of action and crime.
We have already talked about the recent debut of the Cuban Ana de Armas, and looking for no other actor or Cuban actor in the world of Hollywood. Also recently the performances of the Cuban actor William Levy (William Gutierrez Levy), who by his second last name is known to have a Jewish ancestry, have taken a boom. William initially excelled in films and serials for TV and from 2014 he acts in cinema with real good performances.

Desde las producciones en las que participo nuestro compatriota Desi Arnaz y del cual hemos hablado y escrito en nuestros reportajes pasaron algunos anos para que se viera tan sonadamene a un cubano en pantalla de filmes norteamericanos. El año 1983 fue el agraciado cuando el habanero Andy García (nombre completo Andrés Arturo García Menéndez) debutó en papel de reparto de la comedia “Blue skies again” del director Richard Michaels. Andy había salido de Cuba muy niño- realmente no pudo conocer el país que le vio nacer- con su familia contraria al proceso iniciado en 1959 en Cuba. Su padre era abogado y su madre, maestra de inglés. Como actor comenzó a destacarse en obras de su escuela superior en Miami Beach, y de ahí estudió interpretación dramática en la Universidad Internacional de Florida. Por su labor durante más de 4 décadas en el cine, Andy puede ser considerado el mejor actor cubano en Hollywood de todos los tiempos. Una característica principal de Andy es la privacidad en su vida y la de su familia.

Bauer luego protagonizó un drama-suspense “Ladrón de pasiones (1984)” de Douglas Day Stewart, donde nuevamente su actuación fue bien acogida. Para la TV protagonizó el film de acción “La espada de Gedeón (1986)” de Michael Anderson, donde interpreta el papel de un oficial joven israelí, a quien se le encomienda ajusticiar a todos aquellos palestinos implicados en la masacre de los deportistas israelís en los Juegos Olímpicos de Munich (1972). Sus actuaciones ocasionalmente pasan inadvertidas, son más bien en papeles de reparto y más que todo en películas de acción y crimen.
Ya hemos hablado anteriormente del reciente debut de la cubana Ana de Armas, y buscando no encuentro a otro actor o actriz cubana en el mundo del cine hollywoodense. También recientemente han tomado auge las actuaciones del actor cubano William Levy (William Gutiérrez Levy), quien por su segundo apellido se sabe que tiene ascendencia judía. William inicialmente se destacó en filmes y seriales para la TV y a partir del 2014 actúa en cine con verdaderas buenas actuaciones.
