Victoria Denis Giraldi is the only woman in Cuba and perhaps in Latin America who still at the end of the nineties was active as the controller of a lighthouse. Victoria, nicknamed “La Guerrera”, the first woman torrera of a lighthouse on the island of Cuba.
The Cayo Jutía lighthouse, located in the municipality of Minas de Matahambre, north of Pinar del Río, not far from the town of Santa Lucía, was inaugurated in May 1902 with an unusual skeleton-like metallic structure and a height of 43 meters, ideal to appreciate the exceptional seascapes that surround the area, the lighthouse as a palliative had Victoria, La Guerrera, who, as a good anchorite, is one of the few ladies who did not see loneliness as a bad counselor.
The Giant Jutía giant, seen from afar thanks to the brilliance of its metallic dome, has the mission of avoiding maritime accidents, detecting ships of strange origin or belligerents and alerting about possible shipwrecks occurring in the surroundings. It also has an impressive record: it has survived the effects of more than a hundred tropical organisms and even faces the hurricane Gustav, category 4, when it passes over to Vueltabajo in 2008 and causes unimaginable damage to the inhabitants of the province.

This woman, a girl from the inhospitable Cape of San Antonio, the westernmost of the Island, is an allegory of value: she stays alone in Jutía for weeks; she laughs at the phantasmal legends of the inhabitants of the neighborhood; rows very much to cross the seven kilometers that separate the key from the mainland and, daily, it rises and falls on two occasions the more than a hundred steps of the tower of the lighthouse. She bathed in an enormous palangana that she used to fight the desperate lack of drinking water in Cayo Jutia.
Nights happen in a mathematical combination repeated infinitely. At dusk, at seven, they light the lighthouse, to guide ships and airplanes. The flash is 18 miles off the coast. The days are often repetitive, stable, between the passage of sporadic visitors. But time sets the pace, the changes of life. With the union to the coast by means of the road between the water, the calm life will dissipate.
As a remembrance of a visitor to Cayo Jutia, he will remember that many years ago his grandfather spent some time talking with the farera, the first in the country to opt for a trade of men; talked about the times when the Key was a solitary place, when there was no stone, about how much life changed with the assiduous assistance of foreign visitors to Playa Larga.
This is aspired to be part of the history of that old anchorite, the first woman farera in Cuba and that perhaps with this written account will be remembered with time as part of that long narrative of an inospite and solitary place, Victoria “La Guerrera” of the lighthouse of Cayo Jutías in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

Victoria Denis Giraldi es la única mujer en Cuba y quizá en América Latina que todavia a finales de los años novecientos se mantenía activa como controladora de un faro. Victoria, apodada “La Guerrera”, la primera mujer torrera de un faro en la isla de Cuba.
El faro de Cayo Jutía, ubicado en el municipio de Minas de Matahambre, al norte de Pinar del Río, no lejos de la localidad de Santa Lucía, es inaugurado en mayo de 1902 con una inusual estructura metálica en forma de esqueleto y una altura de 43 metros, ideales para apreciar los excepcionales paisajes marinos que rodean la zona, el faro como paliativo tenia a Victoria, La Guerrera, quien, como buena anacoreta, es una de las pocas damas que no veia a la soledad como una mala consejera.
El gigante de Cayo Jutía, avistado desde la lejanía gracias a la brillantez de su cúpula metálica, tiene la misión de evitar los accidentes marítimos, detectar embarcaciones de extraña procedencia o beligerantes y alertar sobre los posible naufragios que se produzcan en los alrededores. Exhibe, además, un impresionante palmarés: ha sobrevivido a los efectos de más de un centenar de organismos tropicales y hasta reta al huracán Gustav, de categoría 4, cuando este le pasa por encima a Vueltabajo en 2008 y causa destrozos inimaginables para los moradores de la provincia.

Esta mujer, carbonera desde niña en el inhóspito Cabo de San Antonio, el más occidental de la Isla, es una alegoría del valor: se queda sola en Jutía durante semanas, durante años; se ríe de las leyendas fantasmales de los moradores de las cercanías; rema muchísimo para recorrer los siete kilómetros que separan al cayo de la tierra firme y, a diario, sube y baja en dos ocasiones los más de cien escalones de la torre del faro.
Se bañaba en una enorme palanga que usaba para combatir la desesperante falta de agua potable en Cayo Jutia.
Las noches se suceden en una combinación matemática repetida infinitamente. Al atardecer, a las siete, encienden el faro, para guiar a los barcos y aviones. El destello se ve a 18 millas de la costa. Los días suelen ser repetitivos, estables, entre el paso de los esporádicos visitantes. Pero el tiempo marca el ritmo, los cambios de vida. Con la unión a la costa mediante el camino entre el agua, la vida tranquila se disipará.
Como recuerdo de un visitante a Cayo Jutia, este recordará que hace muchos años su abuelo pasó un rato conversando con la farera, la primera en el país en optar por un oficio de hombres; hablaron sobre los tiempos en que el Cayo era un lugar solitario, cuando no existía el pedraplén, sobre cuánto cambió la vida con la asidua asistencia de visitantes extranjeros a Playa Larga.
Con esta historia y como mencion solo aspiramos sea parte de la historia de esa vieja anacoreta, de la primera mujer farera en Cuba y que quizas con este relato escrito sera recordada con el tiempo como parte de esa larga narrativa de un lugar inospito y solitario, Victoria “La Guerrera” del faro de Cayo Jutías en la provincia cubana de Pinar del Rio.
