Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez announced today that Cuba will eliminate “the requirement of settlement so that the children of Cubans born abroad can obtain Cuban citizenship,” EFE reported.
In a package of measures focused on the updating of the island’s immigration policy, Rodríguez also announced that Havana will no longer require the “authorization of a passport for travel to Cuba” of those residing abroad.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba (MINREX), “it will eliminate the requirement of accommodation so that the children of Cubans born abroad can obtain Cuban citizenship.”
“The Government of the United States closes and Cuba opens,” Rodriguez said at an event in Washington, announcing the series of modifications in response to those recently taken by the US government.
According to a note issued by the newspaper Granma, the measures will come into force on January 1, 2018 and will also authorize the entry and exit to Cuba of Cuban citizens residing abroad on pleasure boats, such as yachts or cruises.

These tickets will be made through the Hemingway and Gaviota-Varadero International Tourist Marinas. Once the conditions are created, it would be progressively extended to other marinas.
Likewise, the government will allow Cuban citizens who left the country illegally to enter Cuba, except those who did so through the United States Naval Base in Guantánamo.
According to official sources, there are currently around 800,000 people with a Cuban passport abroad, who until December 31 will need that authorization granted by a consulate to travel to their country of origin.

El canciller cubano Bruno Rodríguez anunció hoy que Cuba eliminará “el requisito de avecindamiento para que los hijos de cubanos nacidos en el exterior puedan obtener la ciudadanía cubana”, reportó EFE.
En un paquete de medidas enfocadas a la actualización de la política migratoria de la Isla, Rodríguez también adelantó que La Habana ya no exigirá la “habilitación del pasaporte para los viajes a Cuba” de quienes residen fuera.
Según la Cancillería de Cuba (MINREX) “eliminará el requisito de avecindamiento para que los hijos de cubanos nacidos en el exterior puedan obtener la ciudadanía cubana”.
“El Gobierno de Estados Unidos cierra y Cuba abre”, dijo Rodríguez en un acto en Washington, al anunciar la serie de modificaciones en respuesta a las recientemente tomadas por el Gobierno estadounidense.
De acuerdo con una nota emitida por el diario Granma, las medidas entrarán en vigor el 1 de enero de 2018 y autorizarán además la entrada y salida a Cuba de ciudadanos cubanos residentes en el exterior en embarcaciones de recreo, como yates o cruceros.
En otra medida anunciada por la Cancillería de Cuba autorizará entrada y salida vía marítima de ciudadanos cubanos residentes en el exterior en embarcaciones de recreo.
Estas entradas se realizarán a través de las Marinas Turísticas Internacionales Hemingway y Gaviota-Varadero. Una vez que estén creadas las condiciones, se ampliaría progresivamente a otras marinas.
Asimismo, el gobierno permitirá la entrada a Cuba de los ciudadanos cubanos que salieron ilegalmente del país, excepto aquellos que lo hicieron a través de la Base Naval de los Estados Unidos en Guantánamo.
Según fuentes oficiales, existen en la actualidad alrededor de 800,000 personas con pasaporte cubano en el exterior, que hasta el 31 de diciembre precisarán de esa habilitación otorgada por un consulado para poder viajar a su país de origen.
